Stunning Mismaloya Beach, 20 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Mismaloya Jalisco is a small town, best known for its beach, located 20 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta, along the road that goes south to Costa Careyes (Highway 200 / Carretera 200) that runs between the town and the beach, next to Barceló Resort that used to be called La Jolla de Mismaloya.
The name is of Nahuatl origin (michmaloyan) that means place where you can catch fish with your hands.
To go into the village itself, across the road opposite the Barceló you'll find the entrance, there you will find some options for activities and visits that are highly recommended, in fact some are among the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta Mexico.
El Edén is a restaurant with a canopy tour that has the river flowing through it, a waterfall, large boulders you can use as slides and pools to bathe in. It is the exact place where the original Predator movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger was shot, so you will find a helicopter used on the set and an exhibition that details funny anecdotes and interesting details of the film.
Edenva is a beautiful place with several pools and waterfalls, a bar area and a small restaurant with exceptional views, hammocks and resting area, a wonderful place to visit as a family.
There is a Tequila distillery (Mamá Lucía) in the town and a very popular place to go with the family, the Vallarta Zoo, a large zoological garden that gives you the unique opportunity to see, interact and feed the animals. It's one of wonderful things to do with kids in Puerto Vallarta.
On the beach you have the option of swimming, sunbathing, strolling along the beach and enjoying various activities. There are, for example, several restaurants that offer good sea food and fish dishes, they also share their beach chairs and parasols if you eat and drink with them. There are several massage spots that will help you de-stress. Paddle Zone is a tour operator that offers stand-up paddle rentals (SUP), boards and paddles you can use in the bay and a tour where they take you to visit Los Arcos, natural rock islands you can see from the beach, to see the fish and other impressive natural attractions.
Mismaloya Mexico, one of the best beaches in Puerto Vallarta, is very nice with soft waves, very clean green-emerald waters and golden sands of intermediate grain, not very soft, but not as rough as what you find in Yelapa. You will find yourself cleaning your swimsuit from time to time, though.
There are a considerable number of boats that are in the hands of local fishermen, some of them offer tours and transfers to the various attractions of the Banderas Bay, including Los Arcos de Mismaloya, Boca de Tomatlan, Colomitos Beach, Las Animas beach, Quimixto, Majahuitas beach, Yelapa and other beautiful locations to the south of the bay.
To get to this beach you have to start off from Puerto Vallarta's romantic zone, at the corner of Basilio Badillo and Constitución streets is the bus stop if you want to use public transport. There you take the orange buses marked Mismaloya / Boca. They charge around half a dollar, a very resonable amount if you ask me. Another option is to take an Uber or taxi, they will take you to the same place that is in front of the Barceló Hotel, a few steps from the bus stop, you will see some stands that offer tours and activities, inbetween these and the Barceló, to the right, there is a cobblestone street that takes you directly to the beach, along the river edge, there is no way to get lost, it's about 600 feet from the highway to the beach itself.
Mismaloya Beach, Puerto Vallarta, is also one that has a lot of history, in the 60's it could only be reached by sea, something like Las Ánimas or Yelapa nowadays. At that time, the famous film director, John Huston, decided that the hill that delimits the beach to the south and the beach itself would be part of the set for the film The Night of the Iguana, he brought great movie personalities to Puerto Vallarta, Richard Burton as the star of the movie and he in turn brought his girlfriend at that moment to come along with him to this exotic location, this was Elizabeth Taylor. Both were married to other people at that time and, of course, it was a major scandal, something that did not please the very traditional & catholic inhabitants of the area, but in return, this helped catapult Vallarta and Mismaloya to a fame that has not diminished since that moment in time. Although no longer seen from the sea or from the ground, the ruins of the set built for the film are still there, hidden among palm trees and tropical vegetation.
Do not travel to PV without visiting this beautiful, exuberant and interesting Puerto Vallarta beach, it is a day trip, that, without a doubt, will leave many beautiful lasting memories of your visit to this impressive part of the state of Jalisco, Mexico.

Visiting El Eden at Mismaloya south of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
El Edén is, without doubt, a spectacular location, full of fun and adventure centered in the waters of the river or above the treetops and valley. Read more:
It is one of the popular natural attractions in Puerto Vallarta, the location is very lush, all green and refreshing. There's a natural pool created by the Mismaloya river, here you can enjoy the cool river water, jumping into it Tarzan-style or sliding down the small waterfalls into the refreshing emerald flowing currents in the pool. Lots of fun, if you dare!
El Eden became famous for being used as the set for many of the shots used for one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's most famous movies, Predator. The movie starts off with the heroes arriving at Boca de Tomatlán beach, the rest of the movie was shot at El Edén, the restaurant that currently is there, the pools and surrounding jungle.
There's not much left of the movie, just an empty shell of a helicopter and a predator sculpture, at times (another kind of predator) a live costumed predator too, that will spare your life if you pay it/him for appearing in your souvenir/selfie photos...
Newer generations will not necessarily remember the movie, some may recognize the Predator from more recent versions, some even including the other lethal ET: Alien, or from video games.
If you remember Predator, don't tell anyone, people will guess you're a dinosaur, as it was shot in 1987 :-).
Another attraction this location offers is the beautiful El Eden Jungle Restaurant and for those that want an adrenaline overdose, there's a great canopy tour with more than 2 miles of zip-lines over the river and through the jungle tree tops.
You can also enjoy learning a bit more about the two local liquors: Tequila and Raicilla, traditions and lots of history are included in these famous and infamous alcoholic beverages.
How to get to El Eden
If you have a 4-wheel drive jeep or a similar vehicle, getting to El Edén is a relatively short trip (10 miles - 16 km), you drive as if you were on your way to Mismaloya, right after the side road that takes you to the entrance of the Barceló Puerto Vallarta Resort, you'll notice a road branching off to the left to El Edén, another to the right (that leads you to Mismaloya Beach and the bridge if you were to drive straight out toward Boca.
Take the left branch, this cobblestone road, that follows the course of the Mismaloya river, takes you into the little town, you'll see signs showing the way to the Zoo, you'll pass the Mamá Lucía Tequila Distillery, continue some 200 yards and the road becomes concrete. You will then arrive to the zoological garden gates (on the left), continue on the right branch. In the next crossroad, take the left branch into the hills and jungle. Continue driving along for 2.5 miles and you'll get to El Eden.
