Why visit Majahuitas Beach South of Puerto Vallarta Jalisco Mexico
Majahuitas is a beautiful little beach in Cabo Corrientes south of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico. It has beautiful waters and clear golden sands, bordered by palm trees and the green jungle of the region. It's what one would consider the perfect beach when imagining a place to go relax in the sun, enjoy the sand and the warm and clean waters of the Bay of Banderas. If you are looking for one of the best beaches in Puerto Vallarta, although it is in the next municipality, it is really worth considering it.
What's attractive and why go
It is a very quiet beach, free from the hustle and bustle of the beaches near downtown Puerto Vallarta, there are no vendors, no music rumbling in the bars or restaurants, no crowds of people and the noise that entails. Here, the noisiest things are the green-emerald waves that break gently on the clear, golden sands of the beach. The wind rocks the palm trees and shakes the fronds, that could be considered another constant noise in this sub-tropical beach :-) So if you are a little bit anti-crowds, this is the place for you.
Where Majahuitas Beach Located (Map)?
It is in the southern area of the Bay of Banderas, is one of the many beautiful beaches of the municipality of Cabo Corrientes, beaches that are located south-west of Boca de Tomatlan, the last beach and town in the municipality of Puerto Vallarta that can be reached by land in a vehicle. It is located about 15-20 minutes from Boca and between the beaches of Quimixto and Yelapa. To locate it on a map, use this link:
How to get to Majahuitas Jalisco
It can only be reached by sea, as we mentioned the road continues to the south past Boca de Tomatlan, but no longer edges along the bay and these beaches of Cabo Corrientes are isolated and, therefore, more virgin, clean and quiet too. We recommend you first travel to to Boca by taxi, Uber or one of the many local buses that travel to Mismaloya or Boca itself, also the buses that travel to El Tuito, which is farther south, will do. It's about 20 minutes fromPuerto Vallarta's Romantic Zone. Once in Boca, walk to the village boardwalk (malecon) on the banks of the Horcones River and negotiate a trip with the local water taxis (pangas). If there is any extra waiting time, you can have a beer or juice by the sea enjoying the beautiful beach and the small protected bay. The rest of the trip you will do by sea, traveling along the edge of the jungle and the beaches by sea, you go by Colomitos, Las Animas Beach, Las Caletas, and Quimixto before you reach Majahuitas Beach, Cabo Corrientes. Vallarta Adventures, the largest tour operator in the area, offers tours to the site and has facilities there at Majahuitas, if you want to spend a more pleasant time, with service, drinks, activities and bathroom, it may be a good option to go with them. We can guide you and get the best prices, send us a message at tours@puertovallarta.net
What to do there
At Playa Majahuitas Beach Jalisco, there are few options and we recommend that you bring your own snorkeling equipment to enjoy one of the main attractions of the place, at both ends there are rocky outcrops that house fish and various marine species that you will enjoy observing. The sea invites you to swim and splash around and is very pleasant. The sand is a little coarse, so it is not advisable to let yourself be dragged by the water, some rubber shoes will help walk along the shore in a more pleasant way. The light color of the sand helps it not get too hot, which is good when it comes to walking and sunbathing. The obvious options are also to relax and sunbathe, but bring food and drink because there are no services on the spot. Also, do not plan to spend all day in the place because I did not see public toilets, I suppose Vallarta Adventures would lend you its own, but I have not consulted, be advised.
Is there where to stay in Playa Majahuitas Mexico?
Until February 2018, the obvious place was Majahuitas Resort Cabo Corrientes, right on the northern side of the beach and the hill, but the Chacala indigenous community did not renew the concession and now there is nowhere to stay in Playa Majahuitas, that I know of at least. Vallarta Adventures does not offer accommodation or camping of any kind in the place, for the time being. So the closest thing would be something in Yelapa. ⇒How to Get There
Catch the orange bus that is just outside the Oxxo on the corner of Baslio Badillo and Constitucion. Ride the bus to Mismaloya, about a 20-30 minute ride depending on how many stops the bus makes along the way. Note: simply tell the bus driver as you are getting ON the bus that you would like to get off at Mismaloya. The stop is hard to miss as it is one of the more popular/busiest stops, but a heads up to the driver will ensure he/she will let you know when you are there.
⇒Finding a Snorkel Charter
As you exit the bus, walk down a winding road directly to the left of the big hotel, Barceló. Along that road, you will come across a dive shop on the left, Mismaloya Adventures. We have snorkeled with this company a few times and have been really happy. Note: you are able to customize your snorkeling/boating experience how you like. This is the bonus of booking a private trip vs. a shore excursion with other people. We requested one hour of boat time-30 minutes of snorkeling and 30 minutes of riding the boat around the rocks and along the shoreline.20170715_104234
⇒The Cost
The cost is negotiable. We paid $1,000 pesos (about $58 USD) for four people on the boat, only two snorkelers, and one hour of boat time total. We tipped $200 pesos at the end of our trip. The boat captain did a great job and made sure we all had a great time. The price may differ depending on demand, time of year, etc.
⇒The Beach at Mismaloya
After snorkeling and exploring the coastline, we highly recommend spending some time at the beach at Mismaloya. With no waves, the water is pristine and calm. There is only one hotel on the shoreline, so it is typically not as crowded as other beaches in town. There are a few restaurants for when you get hungry (or need a margarita). Note: There is a river flowing into the ocean which offers ice cold, fresh water. This is great for rinsing off salt water before heading home!20170715_105028
⇒Getting Back to Town
This part is a breeze. Simply walk back up the winding road you walked down to get to the beach, and cross the street. Directly across the street is a covered bus stop. Catch the orange bus that says “Centro, Mismaloya, Boca” back to the Oxxo where you started your snorkeling journey. Enjoy your day!

Chachalaka on the pacific coast of Mexico
Chachalaka, a unique place on the coast of Mexico
Tehuamixtle Beach in Cabo Corrientes, 2 hours S of Puerto Vallarta
Traveling south from Puerto Vallarta, after an hour or so you'll get to El Tuito, a small charming town, take the road going to Mayto and Tehuamixtle, it's in good shape until you get to Los Conejos, from there there are lots of patches where the pavement has worn off, so take it easy and drive at reasonable speeds, things get back in shape when you arrive to Mayto, continue along the road south. You'll take a right where the road forks to Tehua Jalisco, the left side road (very rough) continues south to Ipala beach and to smaller towns along the coast.
The small fishing village of Tehuamixtle Jalisco has a small beach that's also well known for delicious oysters and seafood.
The Tehuamixtle Bay or as locals call it, Tehua, is well known for its clear waters, lobsters, shellfish and other sea bounties, it's found a bit over two hours south of Puerto Vallarta, some 55 miles in total, most of the way is on very well preserved and paved roads, there is a patchy part for some 5-10 miles between Los Conejos and Mayto.
The unspoiled Tehua beach is perfect for those who are nervous about a strong tide and waves, having smooth waters and clear sands.
The place is an ideal for kayaking, snorkeling, boat rides or just basking in the sun.
Depending on the season you'll be able to see dolphins, manta rays or sea turtles. There's also a hidden beach nearby known to locals as the little beach of love.
A unique attraction of Tehuamixtle are its oysters. Since 2005, residents have worked together to respond to the demand for the local oysters but still protect their local natural resources.
Tehuamixtle has three restaurants on the seashore: Liz Adriana, Cande's and La Galleta. Among the menu items, you'll find are the well-known stone oysters (ostiones de piedra), fresh fish (pescado fresco), aguachile and shrimp ceviche that are all absolutely delicious.
To get to Tehuamixtle beach, you can take a bus from Monday to Saturday at 2:00 pm from the Plaza de El Tuito. The return bus departs at 7:15 am.
The drive is around two hours south of Puerto Vallarta, it'll depend on the time of year (road conditions) and driving experience.
You drive to El Tuito, there you take Calle Pablo Ríos and turn left when you arrive at Calle Jalisco, drive past the plaza, continue through the village, this is the road that'll take you to Tehuamixtle.
