Great Barrier Reef Adventure Australia's Lady Elliot Island HD
Of all the places to go in Australia's Great Barrier Reef, why'd we pick Lady Elliot Island? Mainly because the small coral cay 50 miles off Queensland has a stellar reputation as an eco resort, you can explore the reef by wading right off the beach instead of having to take a boat way offshore, and you're less likely to get stung by box jellyfish.
We're glad we went, too! Lady Elliot Island delivered an experience that exceeded our expectations on all counts. We stayed in a small bungalow right on the beautiful broken coral beach and enjoyed three delicious meals served daily in the island's bar/restaurant. Even better than that, we could walk from one end of the island to the other, snorkel inside and outside the protective reef -- where we saw sea turtles and dozens of different types of colorful fish -- and observe hundreds of nesting birds with ease. We also went on a fascinating glass-bottomed boat tour that gave us a great overview of the deep end of the island before we ventured out into the water.

We visited Lady Elliot Island, one of only three island resorts on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, and the only resort with direct flight access to the island airstrip.
The island is located within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park in the highest possible classification of Marine National Park Zone by GBRMPA. Lady Elliot is an island teeming with life and live corals, famous for a resident population of 40 Manta Rays which form the iconic logo of the island.
We toured the reef in a glass bottomed boat, scuba dived,and did plenty of snorkelling. With exceptionally clear water year round, you may encounter turtles, dolphins and a large variety of coral, fish and giant manta rays. If you are there for the right season you may see birds nesting, turtle hatchlings emerging from the sand or migrating humpback whales blow and breech.

Manta Rays love Lady Elliot Island
Australia’s Southern Great Barrier Reef is one of the world’s hotspots for seeing marine mega fauna such as the giant manta ray. Despite being listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species as being vulnerable to extinction, manta rays are hunted in some parts of the world for medicinal purposes. Lady Elliot Island, which is located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, is a safe haven for these gentle giants and other migrating mega fauna such as sea turtles and humpback whales. In 2013, Lady Elliot Island was ranked by PADI, the world's largest SCUBA diving organisation, as one of the top five places in the world to snorkel and dive with manta rays. Manta alfredis can reach over five metres (18 feet) in wingspan and are related to stingrays and sharks.
