Undara Volcanic is a national park in North Queensland, Australia. It is notable for its lava tubes and gem fossicking. Minerals found there include topaz, moonstone, peridot, aquamarine, garnet, quartz and gold. The park contains the remains of the Earth’s longest flow of lava originating from a single volcanic crater.. The lava flow is about 160 km long. The park is remote, and accessible from the regional centres of Townsville or Cairns. The area is situated within the McBride volcanic province and contains 164 volcanoes, vents and cones. Mt Gambier's Volcanoes - Extinct or Dormant?

This is the first in a series of videos I am making about the volcanic sites of Victoria and South Australia.
There are over 400 volcano sites in western Victoria and south east South Australia, many are extinct but there are still quite a few that only be classed as dormant because, in geological terms their eruptions were quite recent.
The Western Victorian Volcanic Plains are the third largest in the world and exceeded only by the Deccan in western India, and the Snake River Plateau in the United States (Romsey Australia).

The geological record shows that new volcanoes in these areas have erupted perhaps every 2000 years in the past 40,000 years—and given there has not been a major eruption there for the past 5000 years, a significant eruption seems well overdue. Science Alert Follow GoJoMedia on Facebook

Prominent volcanoes in the region are Mt Gambier and Mt Shank in SA and Mt Eccles and Mt Napier in Victoria. John has a particular fondness for snakes and took us around the Lava Tongue Boardwalk. Tourists walk past failing to notice them basking in the sunlight just a a metre from the track. A Dutch couple seem slightly concerned: Are they venomous?, they ask. Yes, John replies, This Copperhead is the twelfth most dangerous snake in the world. They are everywhere, you'll have walked past plenty. They carried on ahead of us, looking a little nervous but within minutes were back. Now they'd learnt where to look and that the snakes are timid and indifferent to human presence, they'd found another one and brought us a photo to show.

John finds it particularly rewarding when people realise they don't have to be afraid.
