Bergamo - City of the Thousands
Explore Bergamo through this hyperlapse and timelapse short film, a personal project to celebrate my home town in Italy.
40km northeast of Milan, is divided into an old walled core known as Citta' Alta (Upper Town) and the modern city below (Citta' Bassa, Lower Town).
The upper town in encircled by massive Venetian defensive systems that are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It is also nicknamed The City of the Thousand, because of the large support it gave to The Expedition of the Thousand, a corps of volunteers led by Giuseppe Garibaldi and the main event in the Italian unification.

Places to see in ( Bergamo - Italy )
Bergamo is an Italian city northeast of Milan, in the Lombardy region. Its older upper district, called Città Alta, is characterized by cobblestone streets, encircled by Venetian walls and accessible by funicular. It's home to the Duomo di Bergamo, the city cathedral. Also here are the Romanesque Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and the grand Cappella Colleoni, a chapel with 18th-century frescoes by Tiepolo.
Come explore it by walking across its historic districts, its churches, its funiculars and its walkways climbing up through the lush vegetation of the Hills Park and let yourself be enchanted by the surprising views of the flatland and the mountains.
Bergamo is the birthplace of Donizetti, one of the world’s five greatest opera composers: you can trace the life of this XIX Century musician starting from his native house in Upper Bergamo, admiring his mementos at the Museo Donizettiano, at his grave in the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica and at the city theatre, which was named after him: every season Donizetti’s greatest successes are performed and praised right here.
From music to art masterpieces, such as Botticelli’s, Mantegna’s, Bellini’s and Raphael’s: you can find these masters here in the halls of Accademia Carrara Picture Gallery, housing one of Europe’s most outstanding collections of the Italian Renaissance.
You can discover the amazing works by Moroni, the XVI Century genius of portrait from Bergamo, whose pieces are exhibited in the world’s major museums, along with the masterpieces by Lorenzo Lotto, who gave Bergamo some precious works of art, altarpieces and wooden inlays with mysterious subjects.
Art and history come together in this ancient city: the medieval Upper Bergamo, surrounded by walls and crossed by countless cobblestone alleys, holds numerous roman ruins, Renaissance churches, XVIII Century palaces ad neoclassical façades overlooking its famous Piazza Vecchia, located just a few steps away from the main museums.
On the other side, the core of Lower Bergamo is the highest expression of XX and XXI Centuries, from the GAMeC – the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art – to the Sentierone promenade, the most popular place for Bergamo’s citizens to go to take a stroll, built where the old Exhibition Ground used to be: here you can find some beautiful buildings dating back to the last Century and created by today’s most renowned architects.
Surrounded by historical boroughs, the city centre is the best place to go shopping and have some fun, enjoying a coffee and taking a break before deciding what to do among festivals, cultural events, concerts and shows. Bergamo is a dynamic and bustling city even in the evening: come enjoy an “aperitivo” before having dinner in one of its best restaurants and try a “casoncelli” pasta dish, the most famous local food.
9 PDO cheeses, cold cuts, excellent wines and traditional recipes: these are a few examples from the rich gastronomic offer of Bergamo and its territory. Go explore the food, the culture and the nature of the province, where rivers, valleys, flatland and mountains create the perfect background for the Upper Town’s unique skyline.

Bergamo - World Heritage -
is a city in Italy, capital of the province of the same name, in the Lombardy region, about 40 km northeast of Milan.
It occupies the place of the ancient city of Bergomum, a Roman municipality destroyed by Attila in the fifth century. Between 1264 and 1428 the city was controlled by Milan, but passed to Venetian control until 1797; the Venetians fortified the upper part of the city. After the Napoleonic occupation it was an Austrian city until 1859.
The city of Bergamo is divided into two very different parts: the upper city and the lower city. The first is in the highest area and has the historic center surrounded by a wall. On the other hand, the lower part of the city, although it is also of ancient origin and conserves its historic neighborhoods, is the most modern part, where new residential areas have been built. Bergamo Alta, is a medieval city surrounded by walls built in the sixteenth century during the Venetian domination that were added to the pre-existing fortifications to make the city impregnable. It is one of the few Italian cities, with the historic center completely surrounded by walls, while maintaining its original appearance intact for centuries. The most well-known and frequented part of the upper town is the Piazza Vecchia, where you can see the Contarini fountain, the Ragione palace, the Civic Tower (also known as the Campanone), whose bells are still tolled 100 times at ten o'clock. the night as I remember when in the past they announced the time when the doors of the walls were closed, and other palaces that surround it on all sides. Opposite Palazzo della Ragione is the Palazzo Nuovo, a large white building that currently houses the Angelo Mai Library. Behind the palace of the Raggione is the Cathedral, the Colleoni chapel and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore with its beautiful north and south side porches. Visit in 2014
