Kokstad is a town in the Harry Gwala District Municipality of KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. Kokstad is named after the Griqua chief Adam Kok III who settled here in 1863. Stad is the Dutch and Afrikaans word for city. The town is built on the outer slopes of the Drakensberg and is 1,302 m above the sea level. Behind it Mount Currie rises to a height of 2,224 m. It is a centre for cheese and other dairy products. Kokstad is currently the fastest growing town in KwaZulu-Natal, with approximately 50,000 people residing there.

In this episode I take you to the the Sky Kingdom of Lesotho, the highest country in Africa. This country has the highest low point on earth.

The entire country is 1000 meters above sea level. It's located about 7 hours drive south of Johannesburg and 5 hours west of Durban. For the next 72 hours I am going to be showing you what to see and do in Lesotho!

This is Semonkong the horse capital of Lesotho. It's located in the central part of the country. Right now we are going to walk around the market and buy a typical beanie follow me. Follow me lets go shopping!

After a bit of a negotiating I got three for 100 Rand. The beanies are made out of wool and it's the most traditional thing you can buy.

Welcome to Semonkong Lodge! If you're looking to explore central Lesotho this is the place to stay. They have a restaurant, 25 rooms and they are very close to Maletsunyane Fall's the highest single drop waterfall in the southern hemisphere. You can go pony trekking and explore Semonkong.

Next up we head to Maliba Lodge on the northern side of Lesotho. They have 6 chalets and 4 river chalets. A few different activities you can do in the area are horseback riding, village tour and a massage. They have heated floors, beds and wife.

We head out on horseback for a two hour trek in the mountains of Tsehlanyane National Park. After an incredible trek we head to the near by village of Hamadi to experience local life. At the local bar I tried some Lesotho beer which was bitter but traditional :)

The Drakensberg Experience

The Drakensberg Experience Tourism Association stretches from Estcourt to the Northern Drakensberg. A range of activities can be enjoyed while in this unique but diverse environment and people of all ages, demographics and likes are catered for! A holiday in the Drakensberg will remain memories forever!

2nd October: Kokstad - a few jewels left among the ruins

Kokstad is a town in crisis. It is dirty, rundown and getting dangerous. There are a few jewels in the crown - with Helen Treweek's shop Hells being one of them. The others are the obvious historical items like the Griqua Church, some of the old buildings and the Museum. The town centre is now not a safe place to go and the neighbouring township has one of the highest % of AIDS of any community in South Africa. The jewel we stayed at was Willowdale Lodge - about 10km out of town and very special.

On our road trip back from Durban to Port Elizabeth we encountered heavy snow in the Kokstad KZN area. Through rain, mud and snow the old Land Rover didn't miss a beat. July 2016

The Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa or uKhahlamba (the Barrier of Spears) is a 200-kilometre-long mountainous wonderland and world heritage site. The largest proportion of the Drakensberg area falls in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

Lesotho Highlands Tour 5th February 2018

First day of 3-day road trip through Lesotho's Maluti Mountains. At midday we left from Maseru north to Leribe & lunched at northern town of Butha-Buthe before continuing inland to climb into mountains at 2,820m high Moteng Pass. From there we traversed the 3,000 metre high 46kms long Roof of Africa road past the Afriski mountain resort & Letseng Diamond Mine before descending into the deep valleys to small town of Mapholaneng, and further on east towards Mokhotlong. The highway descends down to a river crossing of the great Senqu River of Lesotho - where it meets other great rivers in a confluence basin of gorges before heading south then west into South Africa to become the Orange (Gariep) River. After a brief visit to Mokhotlong we turned back & continued south along the recently constructed A31 highway following the Sehonghong River Valley until a final climb over the 3,240 metre high Koti-Sephola Pass & down to Sani Flats. A short 10km drive further on saw our arrival at Sani Mountain Lodge by 8pm, where we had a meal & stayed overnight at the nearby backpackers hostel.
