D'Auch, Southwestern France
D’Auch is the historical capital of Gascony. About 80km west of Toulouse and about 1hr by train (plus about a 20 min walk to the city centre top of the hill).
An attractive medieval centre and it is the main square, the Place de la Republique, which is at the heart of the old town, is the best place to start your visit. Auch was formerly a seat of power for Armagnac’s counts.

Be sure to explore the small streets behind the cathedral, wandering through little alleys that connect the blocks, passing some buildings five centuries old. We admire the Jesuit Church, then have lunch at Rosenberger Restaurant, a great spot for delicious, budget dining.

Take the train to Auch on the river Gers. See the 'unmissable' cathedral with its lovely wood carving, floor mosaics and stained glass. See where Henri IV used to live. Go back to the station down a monumental stairway and see a statue of one of the three muskateers, who was a local lad.
