Band of Brothers (BOB) was released on HBO in 2001. I was in Australia in 2002 after my father, a WWII Vet, had unexpectedly passed. BOB was shown on the TV a week or two later. I guess it struck a cord with me, and helped with my grief.
While BOB follows a completely different path than my father, who was in the Royal Navy (a gun aimer in the Battle of Malta - Cruiser Penelope, & then Aircraft maintenance on carriers - Ark Royal & Victorious, the struggle all these men were engaged in was the same battle against evil.
I’ve always enjoyed examining history. Those who forget history are destined to repeat it, and we are seeing that play out now.
Because of Author Stephen Ambrose’s narrative style and deep personalization of the people involved, one feels “along for the ride”, in reading his books “Band Of Brothers” and “Undaunted Courage (The Lewis and Clark expedition), both of which I have now listened to while touring the locations and following the events on the grounds they played out on.
I’ve been trying to understand my personal interest in this. Perhaps it’s; well documented history from several viewpoints, along with that insight into the people that experienced the events, that is attractive. Perhaps it’s also being involved in something so much bigger than oneself, something supremely important.
This is also very true for visiting the Holy Land. The deeper understanding that comes with visiting a Biblical site and the peripheral view of being there has no replacement. The Bible is already alive, as my geography Professor likes to remind us, but being there and seeing the lay of the land and how that affected events gives so much more understanding, and takes it from a story seen in our imagination, to a full spatial view.
Yesterday I walked out to the edge of the Easy Company line in Bastogne. I recognized the location and fox holes from videos, so it was familiar, but as I stepped past the line into the open (no bullets or artillery whizzing past me or exploding overhead) it was almost surreal seeing it in real life visual & aural 3D.
So I hope you enjoy following videos along with some of the insight I might be able to share.
It was of such a noble effort that so many gave their last full measure, we all owe them our gratitude, that we never forget, and that we defend our freedom now.
