The Petards - Pet Arts (1971)
Originally from Schrecksbach (near Schwalmstadt / Hessen), The Petards were one of the most successful and popular bands of the beat era in Germany in the 60s alongside bands like The Lords or The Rattles.
The Urformation of the Petards was in the year of foundation 1966 from Horst and Klaus Ebert, Rüdiger Roger Waldmann and Hans Jürgen Schreiber, who was replaced in June 1967 by Arno Dittrich - at that time traded as the best drummer in Germany. Arno literally put the audience in a trance with his solos. They won with him the young talent competition of the SWF. They were able to record their first LP A Deeper Blue. Her singles »Shoot Me Up To The Moon« as well as her successor »Golden Glass« placed on the 1st place of hr's hit exchange and the hit parade in the SWF.
In 1968 her second LP Petards was released with the No.1 hit Pretty Liza. This year, they produced a sophisticated catchy tune with their single »Misty Island«, which is still regarded as a classic of the Beat era. They toured Germany and gave some concerts in the former CSSR. The halls were fully booked, especially the fan clubs (up to 380) provided the right atmosphere at the venue. In the pop-poll survey of the magazine Musikexpress they were voted best junior research group. Her album reached the 5th place in the evaluation of LP of the Year.
In addition, the group produced even under pseudonyms such as ZONK and FLITTERMOUSE cover LPs, for example, with songs from Creedence Clearwater Revival. In 1970, her third LP »Hitshock« was released. Performances on French television and in OLYMPIA in Paris followed. Her single Blue Fire Light placed among the top ten French and Belgian charts. The guys also showed their musical versatility in the production of a musical (Shakespeare) at the Theater der Hansestadt Bremen. As organizer of the legendary »Burg Herzberg Festival«, the band established a tradition that continues to this day. For the debut in 1970 over 5000 visitors came to see the stars of progressive German rock from CAN to FRUMPY to AMON DÜÜL II.
At the end of 1970, PETARDS adopted Klaus Ebert, who went to Hamburg as label manager. As substitute for Klaus, the band out of 60 applicants chose the guitarist Bernd Wippich, who played an ingenious Hendrix-guitar. The double album Pet-Arts (Favorite Arts) appeared in early 1971 as one of her best and most creative with lovingly sophisticated songs like Baby Man and Good Good Donna.
On March 4, 1972, Arno's thousandth appearance took place. Half a year later, exactly on September 3, 1972, the Petards unpacked their instruments for the last time at the Western Saloon in Wiesbaden.
Then followed 30 years break.
In the spring of 2002, Arno Dittrich reformed the Petards in Kassel:
Arno Dittrich (drums) , Norbert Drews (bass), Martin Großkurth (organ / keys) , Uwe Müller (guitar), and Rolf Hellweg (vocals).
Also back - as backliner is Harald Harry Reichel , Arnos Roadie and his alter ego since the 60s. He looks after the band before, during and after the gigs.
With this formation they appeared in June 2002 at the Herzberg Festival. In the year 2003 a musically justified regrouping took place. For Rolf Hellweg and Uwe Müller Arno could win the ex-Petard (and ex-Randy Pie) Bernd Wippich , who in turn brought Bernd Kühl guitarist of the Wolfgang Petry band from Munich.
This new band played several city festivals and -last but not least- on 15.11.2003 in Schrecksbach the Tribute To The Petards -concert. At the same time work began on a new Petards CD thanks to modern communication technology at the production sites in Munich and Kassel. It will contain both old (but new) and new titles.
