Swarovski Crystal World, Wattens - Walkthrough │Swarovski Kristallwelten - Wattens, Austria
In a small community called Wattens - located in Tyrol, Austria - there is a little crystal wonderland, full of glitter, sparkling stuff and bling bling. I am talking about the Swarovski Crystal World - Swarovski Kristallwelten. The label Swarovski has become world famous over the previous decades. They are absolutely huge in the jewelry business - no matter, if you are in need of some necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings or other glittering household devices, you might find the right thing is such a Swarovski shop.
The crystal world in Wattens is not just made of a jewelry shop and a souvenir shop, but it is in fact so much more. It's in fact a crystal glittering underground museum being guarded by the so-called Swarovski Giant. So, once you've entered the Giants head you will walk through different kinds of worlds or chambers. Each of these chambers is marked by a special glittering topic. The museum itself is always being decorated in different ways. After you've completed your round tour you might have a chance to enter the Swarovski VIP-Lounge, where the service staff supports you with all kinds of drinks and some snacks.
In the outside area of that kind of Swarovski world, they created a huge relaxing lounge. Better to say it is as well a enormously large glittering crystal paradise. The special thing about it is that when the sun comes out the grey artificial clouds start sparkling in endless different colors. I've never see something like that before - it just brings just down and makes you feed so incredibly great. The hilly outside garden crystal zone is interrupted by numerous cozy chairs and funny entertainment things. Don't forget to have a look at the small lake with all the oversize lotus flowers on it. Unfortunately, when I was there it started to rain badly, so there was not enough time to walk through the beautiful glittering garden parc - but nevertheless it's worth anyway to catch a glimpse of such a huge piece of art area.

Swarowski Crystal World, Wattens, Austria
In 1895, Daniel Swarovski started a glass cutting business having three years earlier invented an electric cutting machine that facilitated the production of lead crystal glass jewellery. It had been a family business as his father had also run a glass cutting workshop. One hundred years later, multimedia artist Andre Heller was commissioned to design a museum to celebrate the centenery of the company. The museum is located next to the Swarovski factory in Wattens.
I was staying at the Natterer See campsite which is a short bus ride into Innsbruck. From Innsbruck there are buses to Swarovski Crystal World every two hours or so - and even if there is a long wait there is so much to see walking around Innsbruck that one will not notice the time. Alternatively one can drive to Wattens and there is plenty of space to park there - even for the largest of vehicles!
The museum starts at the mounth of the 'giant' - a waterfall rushing from the mouth of a head formed into the hillside. The museum is open year-round, and features a cafe as well as a park space surrounding the building.
Part of it is the Chambers of Wonder where artists, designers, and architects have interpreted crystal in their own ways. 16 show rooms were created, each of which has a different thematic focus.
As I am not 'arty' unfortunately most of it went right over my head except for the Alpine garden although it may be appreciated by those that can understand such things!

Schafberg, Zahnradbahn, Salzburg - Austria HD Travel Channel
The meter gauge cogwheel railway takes us to the Schafberg in Upper Austria, whose summit lays in Salzburg. With a length of nearly 3 mi. it gains about 3937.0 ft in height difference with a maximum gradient of 25.5%.
The terminus is located at an altitude 5577.43 ft. At a high visitor frequency two trains drive in a short distance behind each other. The Schafbergbahn is in operation since 1893, the oil-fired steam locomotives ( Z serie ) date from 1992. The original coal-fired locomotives from 1893 are only used for nostalgia journeys.
A wonderful place to see the lakes of the Salzkammergut is below the Schafberg summit at the mountain hut Himmelspforte - Pearly Gates - (5774.28 ft). From here you have a fantastic panorama view over the Attersee, Mondsee and Wolfgangsee .
Besides hiking and sunbathing you can also pass the time watching the paragliders who find here ideal training conditions.

The Swarovski CRYSTAL WORLDS - Innsbruck, Austria
A tour through the kaleidoscope of senses...
In 1895, in Wattens, 15 km east of Innsbruck, Daniel Swarovski-Ist laid the foundations of the internationally successful, family owned company Swarovski, with his invention of a special cutting technology. The brilliantly crafted precious stones quickly became famous worldwide for their extraordinary quality and revolutionized the jewellery and fashion business. Several generations of the Swarovski family have continued this tradition of excellent and innovative craftsmanship down to the present day.
In 1995, on the 100th anniversary of the company, the CRYSTAL WORLDS museum was founded on the area of the biggest Swarovski plant near Innsbruck, to enable people to experience the phenomenon of crystal. The SWAROVSKI CRYSTAL WORLDS provide their guests with a magical experience, an escape from everyday life. Inside the Giant, subterranean Chambers of Wonder present a facetted display of crystalline colours and shapes. Under the direction of Andre Heller, original interpretations by famous international artists including Chagall, Dali, Picasso, Andy Warhol ... illuminate the interior and melt into a kaleidoscope for all the senses.
The creatively designed park landscape is the ideal place to relax. You can get lost in the maze or visit the ALPINE GARDEN with its selection of native plants, some of them rare species. You will also find individual works of art in a natural setting. There are artistic play areas designed especially for children and you can admire the panoramic view from the Giant's head.
The world's largest Swarovski Shop, the CRYSTAL GALLERY is situated in the centre of Innsbruck, near the Golden Roof. The building dates back to the 15th century and looks back over a colourful past as an inn with stables. The interior has been extensively expanded and modernized by Swarovski.
With WINTER WONDERLAND, the renowned Dutch designer, Tord Boontje, has created a serene winter landscape made of crystal. With countless images and symbols such as sleighs or boats, the special exhibition takes you on a mystical journey, swaying between dream and reality. It can be visited free of charge up to 2009.
