Trip to Costa Rica, Part 2, March 24 - April 1, 2019
Part 1:
This is a Part 2 of our tour in Costa Rica.
We traveled to Costa Rica with Caravan Tours company on March 24 - April 1, 2019.
In 8 days we covered around 900 mi through various parts of the country and learned about its life, traditions and culture, about their special relation with and respect for the Mother Nature. It was a very enriching experience for us!
Zarcero – The Mountain Town in Costa Rica with just a little under 5000 residents. This town is known for their topiary gardens centrally located in front of the church. Called Parque Francisco Alvarado, it was created by Evangelisto Blanco in the 1960’s who was inspired to trim the bushes to turn the area into an amusing park. Since then, the beautifully sculpted shrubs have become the main attraction. Visitors and locals love to stroll through the arches and marvel at the various shapes that have taken form. Another attraction in Zarcero is the church, Iglesia de San Rafael located right up the steps from the park. This pink and blue church built in 1895 is an impressive one with beautiful paintings and decorations inside.
The Magic Mountain Hotel in the city of La Fortuna is located in the Northern Highlands of Costa Rica where Arenal Volcano provides the backdrop and can be seen from almost every vantage point. Arenal Volcano is acting volcano and Costa Rica’s most spectacular volcano. Standing at a lofty 1,633 meters (5,358 feet), this cone-shaped giant can be seen for miles around.
The other attraction is La Fortuna’s hot springs. These are naturally heated by the volcano’s thermal energy. We went to Baldi Hot Springs - the most expansive hot spring facility in the Arenal Volcano area. The pools are large and small, hot and cold, with walking paths between them. It was such a fun experience!
We took a boat ride on the calm Río Frío that stretching across northwestern Costa Rica and into Nicaragua. The most visited portion of the river is certainly the section that goes through the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge, a great destination for river safaris and wildlife viewing.
We went for a hike at the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park with the beautiful Tropical Rain Forest. Walking across the 16 hanging bridges was exciting at this lush nature preserve. We learned all about the flora and fauna of the area, saw howler monkeys, leaf cutter ants and other Rain Forest inhabitants.
After the hike, we had a lot of driving west passing plantations of sugar canes, bananas, mango, pineapples. Everything is growing here, in Costa Rica, only 10 degrees or 700 mi above equator.
When we arrived to Costa Rica’s beautiful Pacific Coast it was hot here, 95F, and felt like in Florida in July! J.W. Marriott Guanacaste Resort and Spa where we stayed two nights, was a luxurious and relaxing place designed in Colonial Hispanic Hacienda style. This resort sits oceanfront, has a big swimming pool, several restaurants, bars and spa services. But the greatest attraction here for us was a Pacific Ocean – we were mesmerized with magnificent views of the ocean, especially during the sunrise and sunset.

Things to See in South Carolina: Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden
Mr. Pearl Fryar in Bishopville, S.C., had one goal when he began landscaping his yard into an artistic garden in the 1980s, to win Yard of the Month hosted by the local garden club. In 1985, he won.
Mr. Fryar has not had formal training in topiaries yet his yard is full of whimsical sculptures formed from trees and shrubbery. Today, the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden is known throughout the world.
Admission is free, donations are welcome, dogs are welcome (clean up after them), please don’t ring the doorbell to the home.

365 Days in Costa Rica
A year ago, we quit our jobs, sold everything, and moved from Boston to Costa Rica. Was it worth it? YES!
We lived in eight different towns and explored the country from coast to coast. We met great people, saw amazing wildlife, swam at beautiful beaches, and hiked through wild jungle.
With just eight suitcases and a strong sense of adventure, we landed in San Jose and took a cab to the Pacific Coast. In the next twelve months, we moved from Manuel Antonio to Dominical, bought ourselves a car, and then went from Puerto Viejo to Uvita, Tilaran, Playa Grande, Nosara, and Tronadora.
