Snowstorm Aftermath - Part II - Cordova, Alaska - January 9 & 10, 2012
Part 2 of a series documenting the troubles of one small, coastal Alaskan town, Cordova.
Cordova has had a rough winter thus far, and on January 6, the Mayor officially declared an emergency situation following the January 5, 2012 Snowpocalypse. This small coastal Alaskan community did not have the resources necessary to keep on top of the massive snowfall that has fallen since December 17, 2011....and that is now mixed with rain. Tha National Guard sent 70 troops in to Cordova to help move snow off rooftops.
The community is working together. Shoveling, shoveling, shoveling - everybody's shoveling.
Cordova is a pretty special community, and when faced with disaster locals work together to overcome the situation. Resilient, hard-working and positive; It's hard to knock a Cordovan down!

Juneau, Alaska
Alaska, known as America's last frontier and the North Star state, is home to frozen landscapes and towering mountain regions. Juneau, the state capital, is one of the southernmost Alaskan cities in a region known as the Inside Passage. Fjords, glaciers, and icebergs dominate the seascape, attracting glacier hikers, kayakers, explorers, whale watchers, and other thrill seekers. Many cruise lines offer Alaskan cruises and begin at Vancouver Island and go as far north as Glacier Bay National Park, giving tourists a view of the seas not seen from land. One of the most popular tourist areas in Juneau is the Mendenhall Glacier, known for it's ice caves and glacier trekking opportunities. A beautiful temperate rainforest surrounds Juneau, offering gorgeous hiking trails through the mountains, rainforests, and leading to many glaciers. The state capital is also known as one of the hotspots during the Gold Rush era and preserved its history along an area called the Perseverance Trail.
Kennecott Ghost Town | Abandoned Copper Mining Camp | Alaska | USA | HD
Kennecott, also known as Kennicott and Kennecott Mines, is an abandoned mining camp in the Valdez-Cordova Census Area in the U.S. state of Alaska that was the center of activity for several copper mines. It is located beside the Kennicott Glacier, northeast of Valdez, inside Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. The camp and mines are now a National Historic Landmark District administered by the National Park Service.
It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1986.

Bordering the state is Canada to the east, the Arctic Ocean to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the west and south, with Russia (specifically, Siberia) further west across the Bering Strait. Alaska is the largest state in the United States by area, the 4th least populous and the least densely populated of the 50 United States. Approximately half of Alaska's 731,449 residents live within the Anchorage metropolitan area. Alaska's economy is dominated by the oil, natural gas, and fishing industries, resources which it has in abundance. Tourism is also a significant part of the economy.
Although it had been occupied for thousands of years by indigenous peoples, from the 18th century onward, European powers considered the territory of Alaska ripe for exploitation. The United States purchased Alaska from Russia on March 30, 1867, for $7.2 million ($120 million adjusted for inflation) at approximately two cents per acre ($4.74/km²). The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on May 11, 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.
The name Alaska (Аляска) had been introduced in the Russian colonial period, when it was used to refer to the peninsula. It is derived from the Aleut alaxsxaq, meaning the mainland or, more literally, the object towards which the action of the sea is directed. It is also known as Alyeska, the great land, an Aleut word derived from the same root.
