Roccaraso, Rivisondoli & Pescocostanzo
This is a non-skiing slideshow of our recent trip down to Roccaraso, which is a 2h 20m drive from Morricone.
Roccaraso is a small, modern town. The old town was destroyed in WW2 :( but luckily the lovely towns of Rivisondoli and Pescocostanzo are intact and are great places to wander around on a non-skiing afternoon. The American Bar in Pescocostanzo is gorgeous and serves coffees, wine, spirits, chocolate, some pasticceria (buns!) plus gelato artigianale.
At night Roccaraso is lit up and looks really pretty. We stayed at Hotel Il Bucaneve, which is an immaculate new hotel. The interior is extremely tasteful, it is in a lovely position overlooking the town, the breakfasts are excellent and the owners, Angelo and Fiorentina are so lovely. They are helpful and friendly and rang round to find us a restaurant (as the big restaurant next door was closed on Tuesday).
This hotel is 3 star, but has a quality, 4 star feel. It is also very good value, so we will be going there whenever we goo down to Roccaraso.
Italy - Abruzzo
Abruzzo or Abruzzi is a lovely countryside region to travel to in Italy, with dotted with old little towns up in the mountains, that is divided into the four provinces of L'Aquila, Teramo, Pescara, and Chieti. Wonders like rocca calascio and trabuco makes Abruzzo a beautiful unexplored region, specially during Easter celebrations.
Geographically, Abruzzo is divided into a mountainous area to the west, which includes the Gran Sasso d'Italia, and a coastal area to the east with beaches on the Adriatic sea.
Abruzzo is considered culturally, linguistically, historically, and economically a region of Southern Italy, although geographically it may also be considered central. The Italian Statistical Authority (ISTAT) deems it to be part of Southern Italy, partially because of Abruzzo's historic association with the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.

Roccaraso Ski Resort, Central Italy
From our village Morricone it is 2 hours and 20 minutes to the large ski resort of Roccaraso. We could head off at 7.30 and be skiing by 10, then come back at 3 and be home by 5.30. However, we usually choose to stay over for a night and get 2 days skiing in.
Although the resort gets busy at the weekends, it is very quiet mid-week. We went on 18th January, 2018, the weather was beautiful, but the wide slopes were lovely and quiet. Much better than the horribly crowded resorts in the Alps!!
The trails are wide and there are over 110 kilometres, half of which have snowmaking.
There are many areas suitable for children to learn to ski or board.
There are closer resorts to us, including Campo Imperatore (45 minutes), Prati di Tivo (1 hour), Ovindoli(90 minutes) and Campo Felice (80 minutes), so ski lovers have plenty of choice!
