Roccacasale is a comune in the Province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Built on the slopes of the Monte della Rocca in the central Apennines, the village overlooks the Peligna Valley and the town of Sulmona. The village arose from a small settlement called Casali, which had few inhabitants prior to 925. As a result of the construction of the fortified rocca, sited to control the entrance to the Valle del Sangro and the Cinquemiglia plain, from Saracen or Byzantine, the centre formed, with the passing of time, into a typical medieval walled village on the slopes directly under the castle. Rocca Calascio is a mountaintop fortress or rocca in the Province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo, Italy. At an elevation of 1,460 metres , Rocca Calascio is the highest fortress in the Apennines. Built of stone and masonry exclusively for military purposes and intended only to accommodate troops and never as residence for nobles, the fortress overlooks the Plain of Navelli at one of the highest points in the ancient Barony of Carapelle. Construction of the fortress started in the tenth century as a single watchtower. A walled courtyard with four cylindrical towers at the corners around a taller inner tower was added in the thirteenth century. Abruzzo is a region in central Italy, its western border lying less than 50 miles (80 km) east of Rome. Abruzzo borders the region of Marche to the north, Lazio to the west and south-west, Molise to the south-east, and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Geographically, it is more of a central than southern region, though ISTAT (the Italian statistical authority) considers it part of Southern Italy, a vestige of Abruzzo's historic association with the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.

Castelvecchio Calvisio - Abruzzo

Castelvecchio Calvisio (l'Aquila) è un borgo di origini molto antiche che si trova all'interno del Parco Nazionale del GranSasso e dei Monti della Laga ad una quota di 1045 mt).
Una cinta di mura difende l'altico borgo con case addossate le une alle altre, vicoli stretti e caratteristiche, innumerevoli, scale in petra esterne alle abitazioni che consentono si salire ai piani superiori.
Un atmostfera di pace e tranquillità, venata da una sottile malinconia, pervade il luogo e lascia immaginare la dura esistenza condotta in passato durante gli aspri inverni d'Abruzzo.
Il borgo che, ha subito notevoli danni dall'ultimo terremoto, è attualmente abitato e accudito amorevolmente da meno di 200 persone.
