Rafting and Tubing AuSable Chasm, Adirondacks, NY
At the end of the Inner Sanctum Trail at AuSable Chasm, I crossed over the gorge on a narrow walking bridge and clambered into a rubber raft for the last half of the journey. We shot through the Grand Flume, bounced through choppy rapids and floated into the whirlpool basin, which rotated our raft once and spit us out the other side. As we approached the landing dock our guide told us a about an eighty-something couple who recently floated down the river in tubes. They missed the line of buoys that mark the take-out point, went through class three rapids, carried their tubes down the final mile of river and emerged into Lake Champlain, where they were rescued by the Coast Guard. Grinning from ear to ear, they asked if they could do it again. AuSable Chasm has done a marvelous job of developing a commercial operation without ruining the beauty of a natural attraction. Real Adirondack Stories | Who's the Legend: Fishing in the ADKs
“If all these guys are coming from all over the United States to fish here in the Adirondacks, something good must be going on here…” Mark and his fishing buddy, Evan, check out the pros of the Bass Master Classic on Lake Champlain before heading off to make a legendary fish tale of their own here in the Adirondacks.
The Adirondack Region ( is one of the most diverse destinations on the East Coast, offering unparalleled outdoor recreation throughout its dazzling lakes, wild mountains, and charming towns and villages. Established in 1892 by the State of New York amid concerns for the water and timber resources of the region, the Adirondack Park today covers an area larger in size than Yosemite, Yellowstone, Glacier, Grand Canyon and the Great Smokies National Parks combined, and is the largest park in the lower 48 states.
The boundary of the park, known as the Blue Line, can be found etched on historic records and clearly defined on modern maps. Encompassing 6 million acres of public, constitutionally protected forest preserve, as well as privately owned land, the park – in a word – is epic.
Real Adirondack Stories | Intersecting Wakes: Paddling in the ADKs
Canoeing or kayaking in the Adirondacks opens up new opportunities with every paddle stroke. “We’re always finding new places to go check out, new things to sniff, new pictures to take ... you can never get bored.” Dennis and his dog Algonquin share their passion for paddling the diverse waterways of the Adirondacks. They cross paths with Ezra and Audrey, and their two young children, who add “We’re trying to have our kids enjoy what they’re doing and when we’re canoeing, everyone is happy.”
