WATERFALL ROAD TRIP | Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
Multnomah Falls has been on my bucket list since I saw pictures of it years ago on Instagram. It is cooler in person than in pictures.
On this little road trip, we headed east through Washington past some very scenic overlooks. We crossed the Bridge of the Gods into Oregon and explain where the name came from. Then we checked out the waterfall area of the Columbia River Gorge, stopping at Horsetail Falls, Multnomah Falls, and Latourell Falls.
We didn't have the time to hike to Oneonta Falls. Next time!

Must visit cities
1. Mendenhall Glacier Caves, Alaska
Located In Mendenhall Valley of Juneau stands this 12-mile glacier. If you follow the West Glacier trail, you can get a chance to see these whimsical ice clouds for yourself.
Hundreds of thousands of visitors gaze upon its beauty each year, but very few people actually see it from its most beautiful angle : the inside.
Inside the glacier is a series of ice caves that are simply otherworldly — like walking through the wardrobe into Narnia. Only all of Narnia is blue. And you had to hike a strenuous 4.5 mile trail to get there.
2. Antelope Canyon, Arizona
Located near Page, Ariz., this brilliant slot canyon is split into two different sections, commonly referred to as “The Crack” and “The Corkscrew.” The natural canvas of color and unique structure is an Instgrammer’s dream.
3. Oneonta Gorge, Oregon
The Oneonta Gorge is in the Columbia River Gorge with a unique set of aquatic and woodland plants. The ferns and moss make the walls look like a fairy tale, and visitors can walk through the creek on a warm summer day.
4. Skagit Valley Tulip Fields, Washington
Located in Washington state, hundreds of thousands of visitors come to the tulip fields between April 1–30 to see these gorgeous flowers in bloom. The festival is designed as a driving tour since there is no one designated “site.”
5. Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, Colorado
This wilderness area is located in the Elk Mountains of central Colorado and has over 100 miles of trails. The closest city in reach is Aspen and the entire area spans over 181,000 acres.
6. Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida
This isolated island of bliss sits roughly 70 miles west of Key West in the Gulf of Mexico, surrounded by clear waters and an abundance of sea life. The area is only accessible by boat or seaplane, so leave your phone at home and enjoy a day off the grid.
7. Zion National Park, Utah
Located near Springdale, Utah, this incredible 146,000-acre park is a popular destination for nature enthusiasts. A prominent feature is the Zion Canyon, which is 15 miles long and a half-mile deep. Other spots to visit while you’re here is “The Subway”(pictured on the left) and “The Narrows” (pictured on the right).
8. Watkins Glen State Park, New York
We all know Niagara Falls is a sight to see, but located south of Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes region lies a lesser-known fantasy-like area called Rainbow Bridge and Falls. It will make you feel like you’re in Lord of the Rings.
9. Yosemite Valley, California
This 8-mile glacial valley is covered in pine and surrounded by granite summits like Half Dome and El Capitan. The California beauty is a hot spot for tourists and photographers and it also offers scenic trails for hikers.

Watkins Glen State Park
Recorded September 8, 2016
Watkins Glen State Park is located outside the town of Watkins Glen, New York. The centerpiece of the park is a 400-foot-deep narrow gorge cut through rock by a stream, Glen Creek. In this video I explore the beginning of the Gorge Trail along the stream which runs over, under and along the park's 19 waterfalls by way of stone bridges and more than 800 stone steps. Unfortunately the 800+ steps were more than my arthritic feet could handle, but I explored as much of the trail as I was able.

Kaaterskill Falls in 4K - DJI Mavic 2 Pro
A fall flight over the Kaaterskill Falls in Hunter NY.
From Wikipedia:
Kaaterskill Falls is a two-stage waterfall on Spruce Creek in the eastern Catskill Mountains of New York, between the hamlets of Haines Falls and Palenville in Greene County. The two cascades total 260 feet (79 m) in height, making Kaaterskill Falls one of the highest waterfalls in New York, and one of the Eastern United States' tallest waterfalls.
The waterfalls are one of America's oldest tourist attractions, being depicted or described by many books, essays, poems and paintings of the early 19th century. Long before Alexis de Tocqueville's famous essay on America, Kaaterskill Falls was lauded as a place where a traveler could see a wilder image, a sort of primeval Eden. Beginning with Thomas Cole's first visit during 1825, they became a subject for painters of the Hudson River School, setting the wilderness ideal for American landscape painting. The Falls also inspired Catterskill Falls, a poem by William Cullen Bryant.
The falls, like the clove and creek with which they share a name, are a relatively recent addition to the Catskills in terms of geologic time. They evolved through stream capture at the end of the Illinoian Stage, when runoff from the glacial melt that created North-South Lake began to flow away from the nearby headwaters of Schoharie Creek and down the steep slopes of the newly created clove. The rushing waters of what would become known as Spruce Creek eroded a natural amphitheater at roughly 2,000 feet (609 m) on the south slope of South Mountain.
Most of the drop is accounted for by the upper cascade. The shelf dividing the two falls (and creating the large pool between them) is the break between the Manorkill Sandstone formed in the Middle Devonian period and the Oneonta-Genesee sandstone-shale mixture of the late Devonian period.
While the falls are on public land, until recently they can only be reached via the Kaaterskill Falls Trail, a state-maintained yellow-blazed path running 0.4 mile (650 m) uphill from New York State Route 23A, the only road through the clove. This presented two safety problems. First, the trail itself climbs rather steeply from the road, along the sometimes steep and rocky slopes alongside the creek. Second, the trail is served by two parking lots along 23A, both of which require a walk of at least 0.2 mile (400 m) to reach the trailhead at Bastion Falls, just above 23A at a bend in the road. Due to both the rugged surrounding terrain and the limitations placed on Forest Preserve land by the state constitution, New York's Department of Transportation (DOT) has been unable to expand the narrow shoulder on either side of the road, requiring that visitors walk very close to high-speed traffic, including trucks, some of which are in the middle of descending a pronounced grade.
These concerns were alleviated by completion in 2016 of trail improvements to allow access from the Laurel House trailhead. These include a wheelchair accessible gravel path to an overlook platform, a 115-foot hiking bridge over Spruce Creek, and a new foot trail with stone staircase down to the middle pool, creating a link between the top and bottom of the falls.
