Mushrooms in the Forests of New York State
A compilation of short fungi videos from a hike through one of the vast forests of New York State. Mushrooms are actually the reproductive structures of vast underground mycelial networks that constitute the bulk of the fungal organisms we consider to be mushrooms. Mycelium is the vegetative part of a mushroom species that consists of dense, vast, branching networks of hyphae, which are essentially roots in the soil with the thickness of single cells, attached to each other end-on-end. Hyphae secrete enzymes to digest the nutrients in the environment around them for absorption. Mycelial mats can cover vast volumes of soil and land, making some mushrooms the heaviest and largest organisms by mass and volume ever known. Mycelia can kill off entire forests, but also help decompose organic matter and create richer soil environments for even larger forests to grow on later. Mycelia also serve as a food source for many soil invertebrates, and also help purify the soil of man-made pollutants by breaking down chemicals. Mushrooms, the fruiting structures of mycelia, form when two compatible homokaryotic mycelia meet and form a dikaryotic mycelia that is capable of reproduction. The wood fungi shown in this video operate on the same principles.
The stream I walked by in this video created an extremely humid habitat in the areas around it. Due to the rushed nature of this hike, the need to get low and squat at awkward angles, and memory leaks, the footage presented herein is not ideal at all parts, but I found all of this content to be worth presenting for the sake of fungal species diversity. Who knows when I will get a chance like this again, or see these species?
