Strešer (The Stresher Peak, Mountains of Serbia)
Strešer is the second highest peak of the mountains in South East Serbia. Only Besna Kobila (The Crazy Mare) is a little higher. At nearly 1900 metres above the sea level, its shape like a pyramid when looked at from the Lake Vlasina or approaching it from Surdulica by following the Romanovska River it appears magical and inviting. I climbed it nearly forty years ago when I was 33 years old. It took us four hours of fast walking and some twenty kilometres experiencing all seasons but winter. it rewarded us with blackberries, wild raspberries, wild strawberries and near the top with blueberries. it was a trip I yearned to repeat ever since. Forty years later I was lucky to repeat the experience. This time with a help of 4x4 from a friend we reached the foot of the peak. The final ascent of the top pyramid had to be on foot and i kept up with much younger company to my delight. Here I share some of the magic. On the way back we stopped at my friends mother-at-law, a sprightly and lively 87 years old. She still spend summer in the village of Topli Do where she raised six children.
