Vara Blanca is a small village located between Poas Volcano and Barva Volcano in Heredia Province in Costa Rica. It is an important cross-road location for all major traffic connecting the northern parts of Costa Rica especially the Sarapiqui River delta area with the major population area of the San Jose Central Valley. On January 8, 2009, it was struck by a powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake known as the Cinchona earthquake.

  • 1. La Paz Waterfall Gardens Vara Blanca
    La Paz is a waterfall in central Costa Rica. In Spanish, it is known as Catarata de La Paz. It is 31 kilometres north of Alajuela, between Vara Blanca and Cinchona. The waterfall is located immediately alongside the road from Alajuela that leads to the northern plains of Costa Rica. The River La Paz forms the waterfall after traversing 8 kilometres of volcanic terrain, and then continues through the rainforest of the eastern side of Poás Volcano. A short path leads behind the waterfall, where a small shrine had been located. Upstream from the waterfall is La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a hotel and park, where visitors can observe many different species of local wildlife.   • 4. Poas Volcano Poas Volcano National Park
    The Poás Volcano, , is an active 2,708-metre stratovolcano in central Costa Rica and is located within Poas Volcano National Park. It has erupted 40 times since 1828, including April, 2017 when visitors and residents were evacuated. The volcano and surrounding park were closed for nearly 17 months, with a 2.5 kilometer safety perimeter established around the erupting crater. As of September 1, 2018 the park has reopened with limited access only to the crater observation area and requires a reservation to be made on the National Park Website. Adjacent trails to Lake Botos as well as the museum at the visitor center remained closed.
