Banyuwangi Regency is a regency of East Java province in Indonesia. The regency is located at the easternmost end of Java Island. It serves as a port between Java and Bali. It is surrounded by mountains and forests to the west; by sea to the east and south. Banyuwangi is separated by the Strait of Bali from Bali. With an area of 5,782.4 km2, this regency is the largest in Java. It had a population of 1,488,791 according to the 2000 Census; by the 2010 Census it had risen to 1,556,078; and the latest official estimate is 1,599,788.     The Osing people are a community living in the eastern salient of Java, Indonesia, in the easternmost part of East Java. They are the descendants of the people of the ancient Kingdom of Blambangan, whose rulers remained Hindus until they were forced to convert to Islam by the Dutch East India Company in 1770. Their population of approximately 400,000 is centered in the province of East Java in the Banyuwangi Regency. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics in 2010, the Osing people are a sub-ethnic of the Javanese people.
