Places to see in ( Pau - France )
Places to see in ( Pau - France )
Pau is a city in southwestern France, set along the Pyrenees mountains’ northern edge approximately 85 km from the Spanish border. A walk along central Pau’s Boulevard des Pyrénées offers countryside views and mountain panoramas on clear days. The boulevard leads up to the castle of Château de Pau, birthplace of King Henry IV of France and Navarre. It now displays tapestries, period furnishings and artworks.
The first thing you notice about Pau is the location. In the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department of the new huge region of Nouvelle Aquitaine, the city is surrounded by beautiful mountains. From here it’s a short drive through the spectacular National Pyrenees Park to the border with Spain and just 125 km (77 miles) or around a 90-minute drive from the top seaside resort of Biarritz on the Atlantic Coast. Pau became the capital of the kingdom on Navarre in 1512. Its royal status was secured through Henry of Bourbon. Born in Pau Castle, he became King of France in 1589.
Three centuries later Pau was discovered by a Scottish doctor, Alexander Taylor, who announced it as the place for cures of all kinds of ailments due to the great oceanic climate, warm and wet in the winter, and just delightfully warm in the summer. The English followed the somewhat dubious doctor’s recommendation and in the 19th century, flocked here, bringing with them all the English past times: horse racing, croquet, cricket and fox-hunting. The first 18-hole golf course in Europe was built here in 1860, and it was also the first to admit women to its range. The building of the railways brought other nations to this city beside the mountains while the French found Pau just as attractive. Pau became the most fashionable resort in western Europe and remained so up until 1914.
The central old part of Pau is pedestrianized, so it’s a pleasant, relaxed city to walk around. The Boulevard de Pyrénées makes the best starting point with views to the country on one side and the majestic mountains on the other. Only a small part remains of the original keep built in 1370. The building was thoroughly taken over by Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III in the 19th century and well renovated. There are only French guided tours, but even if you don’t understand much, it’s worth going in for the splendid interiors and series of Gobelin tapestries hung on the walls to impress past guests and keep the place warm. And you can wander the magnificent gardens for free.
The thoroughly ordinary soldier Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was born here. You can see the story of how he fought in Napoleon’s armies, became Maréchal and ended up as King Charles XI of Sweden in the rooms here. Alot to see in Pau such as :

Elegant Maison de Maitre for sale in the Dordogne
An historic Maison de Maitre in the heart of a pretty village, oozing elegance and style.
This grand property – originally built as a Consulate for Napoleon in 1792 – has an immaculate garden and pool, and even a second house.
There is plenty of scope for further development, and this charming family home would make a superb boutique hotel or wedding venue.
The principle house has an impressive entrance hall with timber paneling and a tiled floor. This leads directly to the rear garden, and side doors open to the reception rooms. The high ceilings have substantial figured oak beams and give the house a spacious and airy feel.
The kitchen was designed by celebrated French film-set designer Jean-Michel Simonet and features polished granite worktops and a Godin range oven.
The lounge/dining room has windows to the front and rear and has a stone fireplace with an original 18th century iron fire-back.
A billiards room with an enameled wood-burner can be used as bedroom six.
A stone staircase leads to five bright and airy bedrooms, again with high ceilings and large windows. Most rooms have striking wall-paper dating from the 50s/60s.
A timber staircase leads to a vast attic area, which has been recently renovated, insulated and boarded and could provide space for substantial accommodation.
A second house, with a separate entrance, needs refurbishment – but has two bedrooms and a wonderful timber staircase marked with the carpenter’s name in 1788.
The pretty garden – around 800m2 – is set to lawn with shrubs, a vegetable patch and swimming pool (4.5 x 8.4m).
Outbuildings include a former Coach porch and large garage – sufficient for at least 8 cars.
There is also a former wine-making ‘Chai’, and an elevated area overlooking the pool with a terrace – great as a studio or apartment. Underneath the house there is a wine cellar.
This expansive property has been at the heart of village life for over 200 years and has been expanded and improved by its former owners.
There is a butcher’s shop opposite and bakeries, bars and restaurants are all a few metres away.
The village of St Aulaye, on the border of the Dordogne and Charente areas, is popular with tourists and attractions include a cinema and a river-beach with bathing area and bar – great for families!
Bergerac airport is around 1 hour 10 minutes away, and Bordeaux airport around 1 hour 35 minutes away.
Part IV - Ville Bastide de Monflanquin
Upon leaving the Pyrenees, we drove almost straight north toward Les Eyzies de Tayac in the Dordogne Region of France. En route we stopped in the bastide town of Monflanquin whose town center is a well preserved/restored example of the fortified, planned towns built in the middle ages for trade and defense. These towns were usually built on the highest hills in an area to allow for defense. After walking about the town, we continued on to Les Eyzies where we were going to spend the next week.
