Robin | Dordogne | France | Oliver's Travels
This farmhouse style villa in Aquitaine is perfect for a peaceful family holiday. The house is a casual, comfortable converted barn, full of beautiful old stonework and wooden beams. From this perch above the Sainte Alvère Valley the green countryside stretches out before you, full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
On the Dordogne River you’ll find dozens of wineries near Bergerac, just a 35 minute drive away. Here you can visit the Maison des Vins, where you’ll see an exhibition of the history of the 13 appellations of the Bergerac wine region. Or drive a little farther to experience famous Bordeaux region.
After a long day touring you can easily cook dinner in the updated, economical kitchen, but we recommend dining at Chez Cathy in Ste. Alvère (4 km).
If you love the outdoors, this villa holiday will be heaven. Public tennis courts can be found in Sainte Alvère, or golf is outside of Bergerac (30 km) at Chateau les Merles. A 20 minute drive will take you to Camberoux, and the nearest horseback riding stable. And if the kids are in tow, take them to the alligator show at Aquarium du Périgord Noir (18 km).
Le Bos | Dordogne | France | Oliver's Travels
This villa in the Dordogne may just change your perspective. Set on top of a hill in the rolling French countryside, just outside of Sainte Alvere, here you can escape completely if you wish. You’ll enter beneath a picture-perfect arbor, and inside the home exudes that same sense of rustic, holiday villa comfort.
The open first floor includes the kitchen, dining room, and living room, all with the same old stone walls. Take the wooden spiral staircase up to the bedrooms, where the farmhouse feel is even more apparent. Here you can hide away and read under peaceful, age-old wooden beams.
If your family holiday takes you exploring, the Dordogne region hides tiny villages everywhere, tucked between the hills. For more metropolitan pleasures a trip 40 minutes north to the Périgueux Market is worth it. Here you’ll find stunning variety of fresh produce, bread, cheese, even foie gras. While you’re there, visit the Vesunna Gallo-Roman Museum, where you can learn about archaeology in action.
The best part - you're in the Bergerac wine region! 35 km away you'll find not only dozens of wineries, but also the region's conveniently located airport. And don't worry - Bordeaux isn't far either!
Villa Chambre du Paradis | Dordogne | France | Oliver's Travels
You’ll write your own fairy tale from this petite villa in Dordogne. Perfect for a couple on honeymoon, this stone cottage can be a romantic retreat, or just the beginning of the day’s adventures.
After dinner on the covered terrace, the patio leads down to a private Roman-style pool and hot tub for deep relaxation. When it gets late, you’ll retire to the cosy, intimate cottage, bathed in warm light - where lovely memories are waiting to happen.
In the morning if you’d like a refreshing way to explore the local area, take the bikes! Breath-taking scenery and quaint towns are everywhere in Dordogne. Sainte Alvère is the nearest small town (5 km), where you’ll find tennis courts and several restaurants.
To make the most of the region, head to Bergerac (30 km), which sits on the river Dordogne. Here you can learn the history of the region’s wine and tobacco cultivation, and (of course) set off on a world-class wine tour. Dozens of wineries are gathered here - though true oenophiles may also travel to Bordeaux, less than 2 hours away. There's certainly no better way to celebrate love on your villa holiday than with great French wine.
Chateau de Montpezat | Midi Pyrenees | France | Oliver's Travels
Everything will be tailored to your needs at this impeccably designed chateau in Midi-Pyrénées. Perfect for weddings, seminars, or just an outrageously grand family holiday, this chateau and farmhouse down the lane will house 20 guests in the midst of 40 hectares of French forests. The staff here (security guard, concierge, and maid) will make your stay flawless; you’ll have pure peace of mind on your chateau holiday.
The owner, Jean Francois, began a decade-long renovation of this 1520’s castle in 1998, and the fruits of his labour are rich indeed. The opulent blend of old and new styles will please the most discerning guests - from the bathroom lounges, to the ultramodern suite beneath the eaves. Have a breathtaking reception on the terrace or the lawn (the turreted towers looking on), or a more casual fête by the private pool (you really can’t go wrong.)
The nearest groceries and restaurants are 8 km away in the riverside spa town of Salies du Salat. Toulouse is a 45 minute drive away, and is not to be missed. If you fly into the airport here, plan to also take in the arts and architecture of France's 4th largest city.
