Udine is a city in northeastern Italy. The hilltop Udine Castle is home to several museums and an art gallery with works by Tiepolo and Caravaggio. It has views of the city and surrounding mountains. The central Piazza della Libertà has Renaissance buildings, including the pink-and-white-marble Loggia del Lionello and a clock tower. Udine Cathedral has a baroque interior and a museum of religious decorative arts.
While reluctantly ceding its premier status to Trieste in the 1950s, this confident, wealthy provincial city remains the spiritual and gastronomic capital of Friuli. Udine gives little away in its sprawling semi-rural suburbs, but encased inside the peripheral ring road lies an infinitely grander medieval centre: a dramatic melange of Venetian arches, Grecian statues and Roman columns. The old town is pristine, but also very lively: bars here are not just for posing, for the Udinese, kicking on is the norm. As well as its culinary and vinous pleasures, the city also has a handful of excellent museums; this was the second home of Tiepolo and there's a number of his works spread over a few sites. You'll often get to see these marvellous works in only your own company.
Udine is a quiet and stately provincial capital - and also the unofficial capital of Friuli, which comprises the largest part of the Region of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. While the once-great seaport of Trieste is the regional capital and reigns over the coast, Udine presides over the region's inland plains and its Alpine peaks. For centuries Udine was a Venetian city - in contrast to Trieste, which was part of the Austrian Empire. Today, Friuli is known as a region of wines, prosciutto di San Daniele and Montasio cheese. Udine is an excellent location to taste these products and to start a visit to this less traveled part of Italy.
Castello di Udine from the monumental staircase of Udine's Castle, which rises on a low hill about the city, you can admire the Julian Alps rising above the Friuli Plains. The Castle hosts the City Museums of art and archeology. In the map rooms on the top floor, you can see how Udine and surrounding Friuli shifted from being part of the medieval Patriarch of Aquilea to the Venetian Republic, then the Austrian Empire and finally, Italy. The church of Santa Maria di Castello, next to the Castle, is coloured by beautiful frescoes.
Piazza Liberta' at the foot of the Castle hill is Piazza Liberta', which the tourist office calls the most beautiful square in Venetian style on earth. Here you find the Loggia del Lionello, built in the 1400s, and across the street, the Tower of the Two Moors, giant statues (similar to those in St Mark's Square in Venice) on either side of a huge bell. They ring the hours.
Cathedral down Via Vittorio Veneto from Piazza Liberta' is Udine's broad Cathedral (or Duomo) dates from the 1200s, and contains works by Tiepolo and others. The newly re-opened Ethnographic Museum, on Borgo Grazzano, has a fascinating collection that illustrate rural life in Friuli.
Friuli DOC is a fabulous food and wine festival with entertainment held each year in Udine. This beautiful Venetian-influenced city has its own culinary twist on many Italian dishes and is the home to superb cured meats, cheeses and delicious wines which are often available in the best UK restaurants. 10th - 13th September 2015 and annually.

Cerignale (Piacenza) - Borghi d'Italia (TV2000)
La XXXIII puntata di Borghi d’Italia ci accompagna a Cerignale (Piacenza). Il piccolo centro montano si trova sulla dorsale che divide il fiume Trebbia ed il torrente Aveto. Cerignale rappresenta uno dei luoghi simbolo della Val Trebbia. Il Comune, ha un territorio molto vasto e comprende tanti piccoli borghi con case in pietra, vecchi mulini e abbondanti sorgenti d’acqua. Nel corso del programma incontreremo il sindaco, il parroco, il vescovo della Diocesi Piacenza – Bobbio e gli abitanti. Visiteremo il borgo capoluogo, la bella parrocchiale di San Lorenzo e le altre chiese. Ammireremo i boschi, i tanti fontanili, l’antico castello di Cariseto, i preziosi borghi del territorio, ognuno con una sua precisa identità; mostreremo le limpide acque del fiume Trebbia incorniciate da imponenti sculture naturali in roccia. Nel suggestivo borgo medievale di Ponte Organasco, frazione di Cerignale, degusteremo i tanti piatti tradizionali e le altre tipicità del luogo. Inoltre, incontreremo gli accoglienti cerignalesi nella deliziosa piazza del “buon pane”, così chiamata per la presenza del forno comunale, poi percorreremo tutto l’itinerario cittadino: dalla piazza della Democrazia e della Tolleranza, alla fontana della Pace; dal grande manifesto dell’emigrazione, alla “Stalla dei Barbetti” oggi spazio per mostre ed altre attività culturali. Fino ad arrivare alla nuova fontana dedicata a San Francesco ed alla Laudato sii. Cerignale conta soltanto 127 abitanti ma deve rappresentare, per il suo positivo recupero, l’esempio da seguire per i 5700 piccoli comuni italiani. Non perdete la puntata, Cerignale vi sorprenderà!

Bosa uno de los pueblos más bellos de Italia en Cerdeña
Si viajas a Cerdeña, no puedes saltarte este bello pueblo italiano. Clasificado como uno de los más bellos del país, Bosa es una explosión de color en cuanto aparece en el horizonte.
Bañada por el río Temo y casi en su desembocadura en el mediterraneo, se alza sobre una colina el castillo de Malaspina y a sus pies, desparramado sobre el río un sin fin de coloridas casas llenas de actividad pesquera y turística.
Pasear por sus callejones y relajarse contemplando las postales de sus margenes fluviales hace que merezca la pena la tortuosa carretera desde la concurrida localidad de Alguero.

Palazzo Strozzi is a palace in Florence, Italy. The palace faces the historical Via de' Tornabuoni.The construction of the palace was begun in 1489 by Benedetto da Maiano, for Filippo Strozzi the Elder, a rival of the Medici who had returned to the city in November 1466 and desired the most magnificent palace to assert his family's continued prominence and, perhaps more important, a political statement of his own status.
A great number of other buildings were acquired during the 70s and demolished to provide enough space for the new construction. Giuliano da Sangallo provided a wood model of the design. Filippo Strozzi died in 1491, long before the construction's completion in 1538. Duke Cosimo I de' Medici confiscated it in the same year, not returning it to the Strozzi family until thirty years later. The palace faces the historical Via de' Tornabuoni.
Palazzo Strozzi is an example of civil architecture with its rusticated stone, inspired by the Palazzo Medici, but with more harmonious proportions. Unlike the Medici Palace, which was sited on a corner lot, and thus has only two sides, this building, surrounded on all four sides by streets, is a free-standing structure. This introduced a problem new in Renaissance architecture, which, given the newly felt desire for internal symmetry of planning symmetry: how to integrate the cross-axis. The ground plan of Palazzo Strozzi is rigorously symmetrical on its two axes, with clearly differentiated scales of its principal rooms.
The palazzo remained the seat of the Strozzi family until 1937. Great changes were made to the building when the Istituto Nazionale delle Assicurazioni occupied Palazzo Strozzi. The palazzo, granted by the Istituto Nazionale delle Assicurazioni to the Italian State in 1999, is now home to the Institute of Humanist Studies and to the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi. The Gabinetto G.P. Viesseux and the Renaissance Studies Institute have both also occupied the building since 1940. Today the palace is used for international expositions like the now-annual antique show, founded as the Biennale dell'Antiquariato in 1959, fashion shows and other cultural and artistic events, such as Cézanne in Florence. Two Collectors and the 1910 Exhibition of Impressionism. Here also is the seat of the Istituto Nazionale del Rinascimento and the noted Gabinetto Vieusseux, with the library and reading room.

La bibioteca Guarneriana
LA BIBLIOTECA GUARNERIANA
La Biblioteca Guarneriana è una delle più antiche in Italia, e la prima in Friuli.
Nacque nel 1466 per volontà di Guarnerio d'Artegna che donò alla Chiesa di S. Michele tutti i suoi codici manoscritti.
Guarnerio espresse la volontà che i libri fossero custoditi in un luogo in cui fosse possibile leggere e studiare.
Il suo lascito si è preservato quasi inalterato nei secoli costituendo uno dei fondi librari più coerenti ed interessanti dell'Umanesimo italiano.
Tra i manoscritti più prestigiosi c'è la cosiddetta Bibbia Bizantina, le cui miniature costituiscono una interessante commistione tra elementi occidentali e levantini.
La raccolta si arricchì nel 1736 grazie alla donazione di monsignor Giusto Fontanini che lasciò anche i mezzi necessari alla realizzazione di una libreria lignea costruita intorno al 1740.
Il lascito Fontanini comprendeva fra l'altro un codice contenente l'Inferno dantesco.
Nel 700 e 800 la biblioteca si impreziosì grazie a nuovi codici acquistati dalla comunità sandanielese: tra i quali Il Canzoniere e I Trionfi del Petrarca risalenti al 400.
La Guarneriana fu visitata da illustri personaggi come Foscolo, Nievo e Carducci.
Nei suoi locali sono conservati l'Archivio storico comunale e quello dell'antico ospedale di Sant'Antonio.
