Convent of Santo Domingo, A Coruña, Galicia, Spain, Europe
The time when the Dominicans arrived in the city is uncertain, with opinions fluctuating between 1244 and 1273. The primitive convent was outside the walls, not far from the so-called Puerta del Aire. The English Protestant pirates occupied the city for a very short time in 1589, and on the march they burned the convent. In 1596 the construction of the new convent began in the place where it is now, and the community was formed in a stable way in 1617. At the end of the XVIII century the convent was too deteriorated to live in it and the rebuilding began. In 1835 Exclaustration and convent buildings were seized by the government, but not the church. After hard and long managements the convent was restored between 1899 and 1905, occupying the part of the old cloister that was adhered to the church. The Fathers had great difficulty in getting hold of almost everything that had belonged to the convent. In 1955 it was built what is a high school, governed by the community. The convent has always maintained a notable influence by its preaching and promotion of the cult, especially to the Virgen del Rosario, Patroness of the city.
Captain Nervous in the Spanish fog. #20
The Northwestern coast of Spain is prone to fog and this week, we head right into it on our way from La Coruña to Islas Cíes.
After a couple of weeks spent away from the oat on a business trip, Ryan is back at the boat and we can finally continue our journey towards the Med.
We day hop in the Spanish Rias and anchor at Ria de Camariñas and Ria de Muros. On both days, the fog catches us by surprise, and we end up spending our passage motoring, spotting for the numerous crab pots and fishing boats that famously navigate the waters of Galicia.
On the first day, the fog had us nervous, but the visibility was still OK. On the second day though, we could only see a couple of boat length in front of us, and the captain was definitely nervous.
The type of fog we encountered and that is common in this area of Spain was called “advection fog”. At the end of the video, Ryan explains what creates it, how it is possible to deal with it and a few lessons learned from our own experience.

A broken boom - Ep.10 RAN Sailing
We broke the boom! First major setback but probably not the last. In this episode we spend a couple of days in Camariñas in Galicia, Spain and then we sail towards Lisbon, Portugal but don't get very far. We broach with the boat outside Cape Finisterre and get an accidental jib on the Hoyt boom and sadly it brakes. Therefore we end up in Baiona and are stuck here for repairs.
As we upload this we've been in Baiona for a week and are waiting for the new rigging parts to arrive and to install them.
We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved in to our sailboat RAN, a one-off aluminium built Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds takes us.

The maiden voyage of a brand new SV Resource - 380 nm in three nights, two days non stop. Generally great conditions with 15-20 knots of following wind, apart from the last night where it's right on the nose and confused seas around the Capes near the very NW corner of Spain. Then a day's rest in a remote Galician port called Camarinas, reprovision and it's off to Lisbon, Portugal where Cascais is a fab, chique and rewarding first destination. Most memorable - the dolphins saying hi each day, no matter how far offshore ... very special and memorable. And how well and fast this fab new boat sails ! Jul 11.
