Universidad Pontificia was created like Seminary of San Antonio de Padua of Comillas the 16 of December of 1890 in Comillas ( Cantabria ), Spain , erected by the Pope Leon XIII , through the Brief Sempiternam Dominici Gregis . 2 In its beginnings it was a Catholic seminary for the formation of candidates for the priesthood, promoted at the request of the Jesuit Father Tomás Gómez Carral and built by his sponsor, Antonio López y López , the first Marquis of Comillas , and his sonClaudio López Bru , second Marquis of Comillas, that would continue the work of his father. Its internal discipline and academic quality made it a place where a large number of priestly vocations came from all the Spanish, Latin American and Philippine dioceses . The increase of its activity gradually added new buildings to the existing ones: Major Seminary (1882), Minor Seminary (1912), Colegio Máximo (1944) and the Hispano-American College (1946).

The 19 of March of 1904 , Pope St. Pius X granted the Pontifical Seminary in Comillas, by Decree Praeclaris argumentas honoris , the power to confer academic degrees in Philosophy, Theology and Canon Law, making Universidad Pontificia . The 24 of January of 1969 , Pope Paul VI authorizes and authenticates a letter to Chancellor transfer to Madrid University and its openness to teaching secular .

The 20 of June of 1978 the canonical erection and incorporating performed Superior Technical School of Industrial Engineering , the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration and the School of Industrial Engineering (university centers ICAI-ICADE) to now known as Universidad Pontificia Comillas .
