SAILING SPAIN TO A CARUÑA - SAILING JOURNEY DESTINATIONS
A Coruna is a busy town in the autonomous community Galicia in Northwest Spain. Sailors love A Coruna as it is the logic start or end point for ships crossing the Bay of Biscay.
Well sheltered in Ria Coruna, the two major marinas, Real Club Nautico and Marina Coruna, can be entered at any tide or weather. The approach is straight-forward and easy, also at night. In fall fog may make an approach difficult, though.
We stayed at Marina Coruna, the first marina coming in from the sea. It has plenty of visitor berths (floating pontoon fingers) for all size of boats and provides great amenities. We paid around 170 EUR for one week in September with our 12 m boat. That included water, electricity and showers. The marina is protected by wavebreakers but occasionally you will feel some swell from big ships entering or leaving the huge industrial port.
The town has two visible landmarks: The modern port control tower and the ancient Tower of Hercules.
The 55m high Tower of Hercules overlooking the Northern Atlantic coast of Spain was built in the 2nd century and has been in use as a lighthouse ever since. This makes it the oldest Roman light house in use today. The second highest lighthouse of Spain is a National Monument of Spain and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Another distinct building is the San Anton Castle. Its construction began in 1587 and - not even finished - it played a major role defending the city’s walls in Sir Francis Drake’s assault in 1589. This was also the time when Maria Pita took her killed husband’s spear and successfully lead the defense of Coruna with the famous battle cry “Those with honor, follow me!”
We are Maik and Michelle, two sailors from different worlds and different cultures with very different perspectives about sailing around the world together on our 43-foot, steel ketch, Seefalke. We also have different levels of sailing experience. Maik (a German) has sailed for more than 20 years, while Michelle (an American) has only been sailing five years. Our crew includes two Beagles, Cap’n Jack and Scout! Come along for the ride to follow our journey! Ons Island - Isla de Ons
The Ons Islands (Islas de Ons) are of international conservation importance and have National Park status in Spain. They are one of the most important nature conservation and wildlife sites in Spain. But outside Galicia and Spain few people have much awareness about their existance and significance.
The Ons Islands cover an area of about 470 hectares and along with the Cies Islands are part of the Atlantic Islands National Park and they lie in the province of Pontevedra close to the Port of Bueu. There are actually 10 beaches almost all virgin. Half are on the eastern side of the island of Ons, and from north to south are Melide (the largest and nudist), das Dornas (for the northern dock), Area dos Cans (the most central and busy), Canexol (close to the fort and the cemetery) and Pereiró (the southern most). On the west-facing Atlantic are the rocky beaches of Fontiñas and Liñeiro, to the south is Fedorento Beach, and the northern most island of the archipelago is the the Beach of Onza South and Onza North.

- The most popular way is the Camino de Frances (the French Way, ~780 KM, recommended 34 days to complete)
- You can only receive the Compostela (certificate of completion) by walking at least the last 100 KM (or biking 200)
- Unique gear list (you might not have considered):

- You will need credentials (pilgrim's passport) to gain stamps along the way that prove your journey - get one here
- The Camino is extremely affordable - $5-10 Albergue lodging, $15 food = $20-25 total cost per day
- You do not need to pack as much as a typical hike - you will come across towns every 3-5 KM
- There are yellow arrows indicating the way across the entire journey - you won't get lost!
- Spanish, while helpful, isn't really necessary: the towns along the Camino are used to worldwide pilgrims
- Recommend good hiking boots, synthetic quick dry clothing (2 sets minimum)
- Averaging 30 KM a day, you can complete your 100 KM in 3/4 walking days; with travel days, this can be a 6-8 day trip
- Plan for spring or fall if you want beautiful weather - early October proved to be perfect
- For the true experience, don't plan your accommodations/meals, etc - just walk and know that the Camino always provides (but do book for Santiago)

The Way of St. James is likely one of the most trafficked pilgrimages in existence. This holy walk takes people from around the world to multiple courses that begin in various locations but culminate in a trek across Spain that ends in Santiago de Compostela, which is believed to be the burial site of St. James' remains. Camino Primitivo (Lugo - Santiago) | CaminoWays.com
The last stretch of the Original Way or Camino Primitivo #caminoprimitivo is much easier than the first half, from Oviedo. This stage starts in the fantastic city of Lugo, home to the best preserved Roman wall in Europe, stretching over 2kms wrapped around the old town. Apart from its famous wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lugo is also known for its good food. Many bars in town will serve free ‘pinchos’ when you order a drink.
From Lugo, the Camino Primitivo continues towards Santiago de Compostela across peaceful forests and farmland, following old Roman paved roads and over pretty medieval bridges.This section joins the final stretch of the French Way, the most popular Camino route, in the lively town of Melide where you should try Galicia’s most classic dish: octopus. If you are travelling in October, make sure you catch the traditional San Froilán festival in Lugo.
