Tennessee is a landlocked state in the U.S. South. Its capital, centrally located Nashville, is the heart of the country-music scene, with the long-running Grand Ole Opry, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and a legendary stretch of honky-tonks and dance halls.
Tennessee has in the recent past been considered one of the best states to live in the country.
If you are looking to move to a state crammed with beautiful scenery, deep-rooted cultural traditions and where the cost of living is low, Tennessee is just the place for you.
With more than 6.6 million people calling it home, this is the 17th largest state in terms of population.
The eastern side of the state seats the Great Smoky Mountains where the nation’s most visited national park is located: the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is a dream for anyone looking for virgin hiking trails.
If farming is more your kind of thing, the western part, featuring miles of lush farmland, will appeal to you best.
But just like every other state, Tennessee has a mix of larger urban areas (Memphis and Nashville) as well as many small communities that are a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city.
Here are the 10 best places to live in Tennessee in 2018, including best small towns in Tennessee.

Exploring Chimney Rock State Park!! (North Carolina)
This was a fun day hiking at Chimney Rock State Park in Chimney Rock, NC. What an amazing place with stunning views. We climbed all of the stairs to all of the lookouts, squeezed through the rock tunnels and crevices, then hiked down the Hickory Nut Falls Trail to the waterfall. This was a great day of exploring on a cold day in North Carolina!

Worlds Edge, Chimney Rock State Park, NC
This is a short video of my 4th and final hike during a day of peakbagging and viewfinding on September 2 around the upper Hickory Nut Gorge. Earlier I hiked to Little Pisgah Mountain, Bearwallow Mountain, and Sugarloaf Mountain. I neglected to take video of these hikes because they were short. For some reason I decided to break out the phone for the last hike, and this is the scattershot result. I only shot a few clips, and forgot to shoot a concluded segment.
This last stop was to see Worlds Edge, a long band of cliffs below Sugarloaf Mountain in a newly acquired tract for Chimney Rock State Park. The easiest spots to get to were underwhelming along the defined trail, but if you keep scrambling along the cliff edge it opens up to more spectacular views south and east. There was also one cool view north of the main Chimney Rock area around Lake Lure. If you do this hike my suggestion is to turn around at the last open rocks I show in this video before the ridge drops down to Chinquapin Gap. We bushwhacked down to Chinquapin Gap from there and it wasn't easy. There is no discernible path to follow and the foliage got thick in spots. After the gap it didn't seem like there were more viewpoints along Worlds Edge Rd so we turned around.
Hike was 2.3 miles with 504 feet elevation gain in 1 hour and 20 minutes.

BHTV: Incredible Views of Chimney Rock State Park:
“This was the main trade route between Charlotte and Asheville,” says Jim Proctor, former mayor of Lake Lure, NC. “And not only was this a trade route, it was very early on a tourist location. So, this was a place that travelers came to visit not just because it was a waystation, but because it was a great place to stay. And then around the turn of the last century, Lucius Morse came to visit, and he and his family are the folks that bought Chimney Rock Park at that time, and had the vision for Lake Lure. So in the mid-1920s, they ended up buying over 8,000 acres, and 720 acres ended up being what's now Lake Lure.”
“We bought the house as a vacation home. But then, we enjoyed it so much that we decided to move up here full-time,” says John Moore, Lake Lure resident.
“If you've traveled in European countries, and you've been on rivers and huge lakes in Geneva, Switzerland, you see these mountains rising up out of the water, and I think that that is what we have in Lake Lure,” says Paula Moore. “It's like a little piece of Europe right here in the United States, and we feel like we live on vacation, and that is one of the pluses.”
“Now, Lake Lure has just magnificent mountains, the rock cliffs, every kind of vegetation you can dream of, and of course, that's why a lot of folks come and why a lot of movies have been filmed here,” says Proctor. “Dirty Dancing was filmed right down the road, at what used to be Camp Chimney Rock. That was really fun. And then, of course, several years later, The Last of the Mohicans was filmed at Chimney Rock up the hill.”
“We love living around the lake, have a lot of friends who live here, spend time with them,” says Mr. Moore. “We can get to their houses by boat. We can get to the restaurants, to Larkin's and the restaurants downtown by boat, or the restaurants up at the resort.”
“There was an opportunity here in Lake Lure to live on the lake and run a restaurant that's also on the lake, that has its own boat docks, and we've been here, now, 15 years, and we still often commute to our restaurant by boat. Sometimes I even water ski to work,” says Mark Hammond, owner of Larkin’s Restaurant.
“Even when you consider, when I was growing up, there was probably 200 residents, and now there's 1,200, Lake Lure still doesn't have a signal light,” says Proctor. “We have one grocery store, one pharmacy. All the scenic beauty that was here when I was little is still here. It's remarkable that the mountain ranges are still just as scenic now as when I was growing up. The mountains that are literally surrounding this house, the vast majority of those mountains are now protected forever, and that's just real exciting for me.”
