Innsbruck royal palace, Austria
The Hofburg, Imperial Palace of the Habsburgs in Innsbruck, Austria is perhaps one of the three most significant cultural buildings in the country, along with the Hofburg Palace and Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. The Hofburg is the main building of a large residential complex once used by the Habsburgs that still includes the Noblewomen's Collegiate Foundation, the Silver Chapel, the Hofkirche containing Emperor Maximilian's cenotaph and the Schwarzen Mandern, the Theological University, the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum, Innsbruck Cathedral, the Congress, and the Hofgarten (Court Garden).
The original Hofburg palace was constructed from several elements under Archduke Sigismund around 1460. This structure included sections of medieval fortifications that ran along the eastern city wall. The building incorporated the Rumer Gate, which was later converted into the Heraldic Tower in 1499 by Jörg Kölderer under Emperor Maximilian I. The palace was expanded several times during the next 250 years. Between 1754 and 1773, the Hofburg palace underwent two stages of Baroque structural changes under Empress Maria Theresia: the south tract was constructed (1754–1756) on the Hofgasse according to plans by J. M. Gumpp the Younger, and the main façade was added (1766–1773) on the Rennweg according to plans by C. J. Walter. During this period, the Giants' Hall was completed with ceiling frescoes by F. A. Maulbertsch, and the Imperial Chapel was built (1765) in the room where Maria Theresa's husband Emperor Francis I had died.
Today, the Hofburg contains five themed museum areas: Maria Theresa's Rooms from the eighteenth century, Empress Elisabeth's Apartment from the nineteenth century, a Furniture Museum, an Ancestral Gallery, and a Painting Gallery. These themed museum areas illustrate various aspects of the political and cultural history of the former imperial palace, which remained in the possession of the Habsburgs for more than 450 years.

DEVIN CASTLE | Bratislava Day Trip
Yes, you can get to Devin Castle, right outside Bratislava AND get in for FREE! Details below!
Today, I went to Devin Castle, about 20+ minutes by bus outside the city center. It was an easy Bratislava day trip!
It was HOT and I was so glad to see that they had lots of free drinking water at the castle.
Devin Castle was built in the 800s and remained occupied until the 1400s! It is a great day trip from Bratislava. You can take the bus for free AND get into the castle for free if you get the super-cheap Bratislava Card - you can read about that right here:
There is a cool, though small, museum at the top and it has a spectacular aerial view of the confluence of the Danube and Morava Rivers!

While I was in Bratislava, I stayed at an excellent AirBnB. If you want to give AirBnB a try on your next trip, I recommend you do. You usually get the privacy of a hotel at a far cheaper price, and it makes your trip more personal.
You can get $40 off your first stay by using our referral link:
And if you want to stay at the place I used here in Bratislava, it's worth it! A large private room, shared bath and kitchen, and the owner often leaves tomatoes and fresh cherries from her own plants in the kitchen + free coffee and tea.
And they have chickens, too! Barbora was super responsive and very friendly! Plus, it's in a great location, just a ten minute walk from the castle!

Palace in Neuburg an der Donau, Germany - Walking Tour
Palace in Neuburg an der Donau, Germany - Walking Tour
Palace in Neuburg an der Donau, Germany
Since 1505 Neuburg was the capital of Palatinate-Neuburg. After merging the county with Bavaria in 1806, it was part of firstly Altmühlkreis (Its center was Eichstätt) between 1806 and 1808, later Oberdonaukreis (Its center was firstly Eichstätt between 1810 and 1817, later Augsburg between 1817 and 1837). It was a rural district center in Schwaben region in 29 November 1837 and On 30 June 1972, Neuburg an der Donau became a Grosse Kreisstadt (similar to a county seat) and was passed to Upper Bavaria region.
Neuburg an der Donau has a defensive wall around the old town. The old town contains some well worth seeing institutions and happenings, such as the 'Birdland Jazz Club Neuburg', one of the best locations for jazz auditions in Germany.
The Renaissance Ducal Palace (Pfalz-Neuburger Residenzschloss), Neuburg Castle, which was built 1530-45 under Otto Henry, Elector Palatine and took on its present-day form during the reign of Philip William, Elector Palatine, today houses several museums including a Baroque gallery of the Bavarian State Picture Collection and the Archäologie-Museum Schloss Neuburg an der Donau (Neuburg an der Donau Castle Archaeology Museum), a branch of the Bavarian State Archaeological Collection. To the other main sights belong also the late Renaissance court church Hofkirche (1607/08 built by Josef Heintz), the Town Hall (1603/09), the rococo Provinzialbibliothek (Provincial Library, 1731/32) and the baroque churches of St. Peter (1641/46) and St. Ursula (1700/01). Grünau is a renaissance hunting lodge of Elector Otto Henry, which is situated 7 km further east.
What to Expect from a One Star Hotel in Salzburg, Austria
It was quite a comedown from three-star Hotel Gappmaier in Saalbach to one-star Hotel Schwarzes Rossl in Salzburg and paying the same price for a room here without dinner didn't help. There's nothing the matter with Hotel Schwarzes Rossl; in a good location with friendly, helpful staff, clean rooms and elevator. But we happened to stay at a bad time. Jackhammers began working on the street under our fourth floor room at 7:00a and didn't quit until 6:00p. Not that people spend much time in rooms with so much to see and do in Salzburg but the noise was deafening. Construction is now over with more to come.
We changed rooms to the best available on the first floor overlooking garbage cans and looking into a communal bathroom available for people who had rooms without shower or W/C. Sigh... What can you do but suck it up since hotel rooms in Salzburg are expensive; expected with over 5.5 million tourists a year...
