The town of Shaunavon is in southwest Saskatchewan at the junction of Highways 37 and 13. It is 110 kilometres from Swift Current, 163 kilometres from the Alberta border and 74 kilometres from the Montana border. Shaunavon was established in 1913 along the Canadian Pacific Railway line. The town has several nicknames including Bone Creek Basin, Boomtown, and Oasis of the Prairies. The latter name is derived from the park located in the centre of town. The Shaunavon Formation, a stratigraphical unit of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin is named for the town.

    Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park is an interprovincial park straddling the southern Alberta-Saskatchewan boundary, located southeast of Medicine Hat. It is Canada's first and only interprovincial park. The park consists of two protected areas, the 345 km2 west block, that straddles the Alberta/Saskatchewan boundary between Alberta Highway 41, the townsite of Elkwater, Saskatchewan Highway 615, Saskatchewan Highway 271 and Fort Walsh, and the centre block, an additional area of 58 km2 in Saskatchewan, west of Saskatchewan Highway 21.

    Fort Walsh is a National Historic Site of Canada that was a North-West Mounted Police fort and the site of the Cypress Hills Massacre. Administered by Parks Canada, it forms a constituent part of Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park. The fort was built in June 1875, and was named for its builder, inspector James Morrow Walsh. The fort was intended to curb the illegal whiskey trade, protect Canada's nearby border with the United States, and aid with native policy. These factors had been brought to public attention following the Cypress Hills Massacre of 1873, and resulted in Sir John A. Macdonald's establishment of the North-West Mounted Police.     The T.rex Discovery Centre is a museum located in Eastend, Saskatchewan, Canada, that was built to contain the fossil remains of the Tyrannosaurus rex nicknamed Scotty which was found nearby. It also showcases many other fossil specimens that can be found in Saskatchewan and the surrounding area. The centre is operated by the Royal Saskatchewan Museum , of Regina, Saskatchewan, and was officially opened on May 30, 2003. The building contains the RSM Fossil Research Station.Scotty the T. rex was found in August 1991 by local high school principal Robert Gebhardt.
