PEI
If you're a fan of Anne of Green Gables or just want a serene, relaxing vacation, check out Prince Edward Island. I share my vacation highlights so you can make the most out of your trip to Canada and PEI, the home of Lucy Maud Montgomery and the inspiration for Anne of Green Gables.
Prince Edward Island (PEI or P.E.I.; French: Île-du-Prince-Édouard) is a province of Canada consisting of the island of the same name, and several much smaller islands. Prince Edward Island is one of the three Maritime Provinces and is the smallest province in both land area and population. It is part of the traditional lands of the Mi'kmaq, and became a British colony in the 1700s and was federated into Canada as a province in 1873. Its capital is Charlottetown. According to the 2016 census, the province of Prince Edward Island has 142,907 residents.
The backbone of the economy is farming; it produces 25% of Canada's potatoes. The island has several informal names: Garden of the Gulf, referring to the pastoral scenery and lush agricultural lands throughout the province; and Birthplace of Confederation or Cradle of Confederation,[5] referring to the Charlottetown Conference in 1864, although PEI did not join Confederation until 1873, when it became the seventh Canadian province. Historically, PEI is one of Canada's older settlements and demographically still reflects older immigration to the country, with Celtic, Anglo-Saxon and French surnames being dominant to this day.
PEI is located about 200 kilometres (120 miles) north of Halifax, Nova Scotia and 600
Prince Edward Island is located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, west of Cape Breton Island, north of the Nova Scotia peninsula, and east of New Brunswick. Its southern shore bounds the Northumberland Strait. The island has two urban areas. The largest surrounds Charlottetown Harbour, situated centrally on the island's southern shore, and consists of the capital city Charlottetown, and suburban towns Cornwall and Stratford and a developing urban fringe. A much smaller urban area surrounds Summerside Harbour, situated on the southern shore 40 km (25 mi) west of Charlottetown Harbour, and consists primarily of the city of Summerside. As with all natural harbours on the island, Charlottetown and Summerside harbours are created by rias.
The island's landscape is pastoral. Rolling hills, woods, reddish white sand beaches, ocean coves and the famous red soil have given Prince Edward Island a reputation as a province of outstanding natural beauty. The provincial government has enacted laws to preserve the landscape through regulation, although there is a lack of consistent enforcement, and an absence of province-wide zoning and land-use planning.[citation needed] Under the Planning Act of the province, municipalities have the option to assume responsibility for land-use planning through the development and adoption of official plans and land use bylaws. Thirty-one municipalities have taken responsibility for planning. In areas where municipalities have not assumed responsibility for planning, the Province remains responsible for development control.
Anne of Green Gables In-Depth House Tour - Prince Edward Island
This video was filmed at the actual home that inspired the Anne of Green Gables and other books in the series. The farm is located in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island near the northern part of the island. It’s a beautiful drive coming from Charlottetown as you’ll pass through rolling farmlands, tiny fishing villages and see stunning seascapes (with red rocks like seen in the movie). The house is fully furnished and decorated as it would have been in the period of the books. If you’re an Anne of Green Gables fan and coming from a cruise ship, then if possible you’ll want to rent a car to come here rather than take a bus tour since none of the bus tours stay long enough for the true fan to adequately soak up the area and also visit the sizeable gift shop. One complaint about this is that they developed a golf course way too close to the farm. I don’t mind the course, but put it a few more acres away to create a buffer. Anyways, if you enjoyed this Anne of Green Gables House Tour video then make sure to give it a thumbs up or post a comment below if you’ve been here or want to go!
My Trip to Prince Edward Island 2016
I visited Prince Edward Island in summer 2016. Again, again and again! Enjoy the sceneries, landscapes and footages of this wonderful and exciting trip. Admire attractions related to Anne of Green Gables. Enjoy the relaxing beaches and the rhythm of ceilidhs. PEI: one of my best summer destinations!
Prince Edward Island (PEI) is one of the four maritime provinces in Canada with Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland. PEI is the smallest province in Canada, but one of the most beautiful ones with its wonderful landscapes, beaches and red sand. PEI is also home of Anne of Green Gables, written by Lucy Maud Montgomery in 1908.

Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, Canada
On the north shore of P.E.I., Cavendish offers appealing options when looking for a day at the beach. Spectacular dune formations and salt marshes have become world famous, and various trails and interpretive activities allow visitors to enjoy the wetlands and natural habitats and appreciate its priceless legacy. Follow the signs and take a stroll along the salt-water marshes, described as nurseries of the ocean, and enjoy theme parks, golf courses and wide open spaces that are perfect for family fun.
Time Lapse: Prince Edward Island - Green Gables and Red Sandy Shores!
July 6, 2017 - Let's go for a joyride through the countryside of Prince Edward Island! Everything is at a slower, more relaxed pace, here, and you can tell - nearly all of the roads are only two lanes, and there are still no bottlenecks to be found!
Leaving the capital city of Charlottetown, I head northwest to the shores of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence near Cavendish, where I come across what may very well be the most famous site on the entire island: the Green Gables Farmhouse.
Preserved within the boundaries of Prince Edward Island National Park, the Green Gables Farmhouse was the actual location that inspired and acted as the setting for multiple stories by Anne of Green Gables authour L.M. Montgomery. It's a goregous plot of land and definitely worth a visit; even the nearby tourist-trappy attractions outside of the National Park, such as Avonlea Village, are worth a visit.
I also visit the golden sandy dunes of the north shore of PEI that tumble into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, the large salt water basin that collects all the water that has flowed from the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes.
I follow the Green Gables Shore Scenic Route to Summerside, the second largest city on the island, and then begin to head east via the Red Sands Shore Scenic Route to Argyle Shore Provincial Park, where I got to see the red sandy southern shores and Northumberland Strait with my own eyes.
After that it's a quick jaunt back to Charlottetown, but not before I swing by Cows Creamery (located on Milky Way, of course) for a delicious two-scoop cone. So good.
Prince Edward Island is fantastic...just make sure you come in the summer months!
