Waskesiu Lake is a lake located roughly in the centre of Prince Albert National Park. The lake's name, meaning red deer, or elk, in the Cree language, the resort town of Waskesiu Lake on its eastern shore. Waskesiu Lake is by far the most developed lake in the park, and features a variety of recreational facilities along all sides of its shoreline, including two public camp grounds: Red Deer and Beaver Glen. The lake has one island off its western shore known as King Island after park founder William Lyon Mackenzie King.

Though declared a national park March 24, 1927, it had its official opening ceremonies on August 10, 1928 performed by Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. The park is open all year but the most visited period is from May to September. Welcome to Saskatchewan!

Often known as an incredibly flat province, nothing could be further from the truth. With lush boreal forests and pristine lakes in the North to prairie landscapes and badlands in the South, Saskatchewan is the perfect place for outdoor lovers to explore.

We drove a pontoon boat around Lake Waskesiu, learned about the province's first nations at Wanuskewin Heritage Centre, and went for a float in Canada's version of the dead sea. We also toured the RCMP Heritage Centre, witnessed the RCMP sunset ceremony, climbed a massive sand dune, and hiked through one of the few remaining natural grasslands in North America. We packed a lot of adventures into our short visit and can't wait to return one day and explore the province further.

Prince Albert National Park: Why It Is A Jewel In The Wild

It wasn’t long into my visit to Prince Albert National Park before I discovered what I loved most. Though, it wasn’t something singular. It came with a mix of some of the best wildlife sightings in unexpected spots (read on), the remoteness (no big nearby towns) and spectacular beauty (this is lake country). The park is located about 2.5 hours north of Saskatoon, an area where the landscape is flat and open- it’s the plains – but still manages to surprise. For instance, seemingly out of nowhere, as you get closer to Prince Albert National Park, leafy trees come into focus and you enter a boreal forest. The towering white and black spruce, jack pine and aspen trees are only the beginning. The park is also dotted with lakes of all sizes. The largest are Crean Lake, Kingsmere Lake and Waskesiu Lake. Best of all, there are plenty of chances to spot wildlife, here, including bears, moose, fox, bison, otters, elk and dear. The park is also home to nearly 200 species of birds, so don’t forget to look up.
