Netherlands: Haarzuilens - Castle De Haar
Castle De Haar is located near Haarzuilens, in the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands. The current buildings, except for the chapel, date from 1892 and are the work of Dutch architect P.J.H. Cuypers.
The oldest historical record of a building at the location of the current castle dates to 1391.

In 1892 architect Pierre Cuypers (1827-1921) was contracted to rebuild the ruinous castle, which took 15 years.
The name of Pierre Cuypers is most frequently associated with the Amsterdam Central Station (1881--1889) and the Rijksmuseum (1876--1885), both in Amsterdam.
The castle as it looks now, is an example of Neo-Gothic or Gothic Revival architecture.
It 200 rooms and 30 bathrooms, of which only a small number on the ground floor have been opened to be viewed by the public. In the hall, Cuypers has placed a statue with his own image in a corner of the gallery on the first floor.
The castle was equipped by Cuypers with the most modern gadgets, such as electrical lighting with its own generator, and central heating by way of steam. This installation is internationally recognized as an industrial monument. The kitchen was for that period also very modern and still has a large collection of pots and pans and an enormous furnace of approximately 6 metres long, which is heated with peat or coals. The tiles in the kitchen are decorated with the coats of arms of the families De Haar and Van Zuylen, which were for this purpose especially baked in Franeker. Cuypers marked out the difference between the old walls and the new bricks, by using a different kind of brick for the new walls. For the interior Cuypers made a lot of use of cast iron.
The interior of the castle is decorated with richly ornamented woodcarving, which reminds one of the interior of a Roman Catholic church. This carving was made in the workshop of Cuypers in Roermond.
Cuypers even designed the tableware. The interior is also furnished with many works of the Rothschild collections, including beautiful old porcelain from Japan and China, and several old Flemish tapestries and paintings with religious illustrations. A showpiece is a carrier coach of the woman of a Shogun from Japan. There is only one more left in the world, which stands in a museum in Tokyo.

This place was set on an abandoned rail track on Manhattan's West Side, this sprawling nearly 1½-mile-long landscaped park stretches over three of the city's most lively neighborhoods: the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen. High Line is standing about 30 feet above street level and it offers sweeping views of the Hudson River and Manhattan's cityscape. But the vista isn't the only reason visitors and Manhattanites flock to this manicured green space. Here, you'll find continually changing public art installations, a handful of food vendors and a sprawling picnic and sunbathing area. This is a great walk from start to finish. The architecture of the buildings up and down the High Line is diverse and interesting, as well as the art built in to the High Line itself. It is such an interesting experience to walk in a park surrounded by a concrete jungle. As of September 21, 2014 the High Line now extends to 34th St. between 11th & 12th Ave. The main designer of High Line Park is landscape architect James Corner.

The park's attractions include naturalized plantings, inspired by plants which grew on the disused tracks and open views of the city and the Hudson River. The pebble-dash concrete walkways swell and constrict, swing from side to side, and divide into concrete tines which meld the hardscape with plantings embedded in railroad-gravel mulch. By opening the paving, we allow the plants to bleed through There are over 125 species plant palette and mixed species of birch that provides shade by late afternoon.

Middachter Allee lane in Ellecom. This amazing tree tunnel in Steeg/Ellecom in The Netherlands (Gelderland province) has an even more amazing story. The beech trees once stood almost 50 meters or 150 feet high! That is till WW2 got in the way. Then the Nazi Germans cut down every single tree… Not replanted till recently, the two, double rows of European or Common Beech trees, form a nice tunnel, even in the winter… Also note, this lane or avenue is one of the oldest in Dutch history. Hence, one well travelled road, over the centuries!

The Middachter Allee was famous until the Second World War for its beautiful double rows of European beech trees. This allee was often mentioned as the most beautiful beech lane in the Netherlands. The beech trees were planted around 1767 and had reached a phenomenal height of more than 40 meters after more than 170 years. According to old data, some beeches would have reached 47 m. In the last period of the Second World War, however, the German troops had blown up the avenue to block the passage for the deceased. In the fifties of the twentieth century the avenue was renewed in two phases. The newly planted beeches have now reached a considerable size and the crowns form another dome. Only around 2100 will they be able to equal the allure of the old avenue. The fact that the avenue had sustained it without the premature destruction until 2003 is unlikely: the beech trees on the transitional driveway of Middachten originate from the same period and have not been cut down, but in a decaying state. One would not have tolerated this along the main road and, because of the danger of traffic, would have passed the lane around 1980.”

Fact - The largest tree in all of The Netherlands is also located in Gelderland, near Laren. It is an oak tree, a very big oak tree!

So there is much to tell about this beautiful avenue and it is therefore unfortunate that the Second World War put an end to the existence of this Allee. By the end of the war, on the night of 5 to 6 April, the residents in the vicinity of the Middachter were all startled by heavy explosions and dull strokes. The German occupiers had begun to cut the beech of the inner row with trotyl. On 10 April, the demolition began again. From the part of the Allee between the village De Steeg and the driveway of the castle the southeastern row was felled. Of the approximately 1500 trees that had been planted around 1770, the Germans had destroyed 145.”

A Beech tree tunnel from 1767 in The Netherlands. The Great War may have gotten in it’s way, but the people of the region made sure the tree tunnel lived to see another day.

The video is a simple appreciation of the fast vanishing beauty of our natural world. We take many things for granted like the blue sky, check out China and Beijing with the brown pollution that is not only unsightly but harmful to health, and this is found in many other countries and cities.
The quiet of a mountain lake and solitude is lost on people living in crowded circumstances, meaning city life or some countries where there is no place left to go and contemplate things and see natural beauty all around.
Canadians are lucky but that doesn't mean our future is secure for these places or that we don't have a responsibility to the rest of the world. We are a resource sector and driven economy and much of what we produce and export contributes to the decline in other people and ultimately our lifestyle.
