Bundanoon Village, NSW, Australia
Bundanoon in The Southern Highlands has Excellent Accommodation, there are many Things to Do, Places to Go and many Restaurants, Cafes and even a wonderful Olde Worlde Pub. Just 90 minutes from Canberra and Sydney it is close enough to visit with young children, and you can experience a completely different Country Lifestyle.
There is even a Farm Stay called Morvern Valley where you can rent a cottage for a weekend or a week! Morvern Valley was one of the earliest guest accommodations in Bundanoon.
In Bundanoon you can go Horse Riding, or Visit the Sunnatarum Monastry. See Glow Worms in a ‘must do’ twilight adventure walk. The Morton National Park has great bushwalking including Fairy Bower Waterfalls, Erith Coal Mine. Coal Creek, Lovers Walk, Fossil Beds, Bonnie View, The Grand Canyon, Beauchamp Cliffs, Tooth’s Lookout, Gambell’s Rest and more!
Hamilton Hume (of later Hume and Hovell fame) has generally been credited as the first white man to find his way to the Bowral/Moss Vale locality in 1814. Dr. Charles Throsby first mentions this exact area in his diary in 1818. In his expedition diary he refers to Bundanoon as Bantanoon - from the local aboriginal name meaning place of deep gullies”.
The site of the present village of Bundanoon had been a meeting and trading place for the Wadi-wadi and Gandangara peoples for centuries. Coal creek which crosses Morvern Valley Bundanoon was a creek used by these peoples. There are sharpening grooves and rock paintings on the surfaces of the sandstone of Coal Creek near to Morvern Valley of these indigenous peoples.
The deep gullies at Bundanoon were seen as a barrier to communication and travel. Indeed Throsby realized looking out over the cliffs that there was to be no easy access to the coast from this area which is what he had been seeking. But the magnificent scenery of The Gullies so impressed Throsby, that he immediately began to urge Governor Lachlan Macquarie to declare what we call today a heritage reserve, of a thousand acres, over the area (granted in 1824) next to Morvern Valley Farm Stay. This natural reserve Charles Throsby was so dedicated to preserve, is today the Bundanoon section of the Morton National Park just a 500 meter walk from Morvern Valley.
The Gullies with their beautiful lookouts, waterfalls and escarpments were to later be one of the most important ingredients in the development of the village. The Gullies had immense visual value for tourism – indeed the deep gullies have made Bundanoon what it is today.
Early settlement of Europeans in this area of The Southern Highlands had mainly been in the vicinity of Berrima and Suttons Forest. But after the Land Act of 1861 was passed, selectors began taking up land towards present day Bundanoon. Travelling was very hard in the early days for these settlers as the railway did not arrive until 1868.
Horseback, Bullock teams and sturdy horse and carts were the only transport available for people, supplies and equipment. The Morvern Valley Original Homestead fronts onto Grey Gum Lane - this narrow lane was the original route the first explorers traversed to open up the Southern areas of NSW – the ‘main road’ of its time!
Bundanoon was merely a few scattered farms until the arrival of the Railway en route to Goulburn in 1868. Morvern Valley was one of those scattered farms since 1862. The Tooth Family were one of the very Earliest Settlers of Bundanoon. There were 86 guesthouses in Bundanoon and Morvern Valley operated as one of these as early as 1896.
Driving to Lancaster, Pennsylvania from NYC
Saturday, August 11th 2018 - Started out in midtown, NYC and headed south towards the Holland Tunnel on the west side highway. Crossed over to New Jersey and merged onto Route 1-9 before connecting up to I-78 west towards Pennsylvania. Got off I-78 a little after Allentown and merged onto PA-222 towards Reading and finally down to Lancaster. Drove around Lancaster for little bit, before heading back to NYC. Used the southern route back to NYC by heading east on the Lincoln Highway/PA-30 towards King of Prussia, made some small stops along the way. Merged onto PA-202 near Exton before connecting with I-76/276. Exited near Westbury to connect with Route 263 North to connect with PA-202 back towards I-78 back to NYC. Torrential rain throughout the day, otherwise uneventful drive.
Places to see in ( Bruton - UK )
Places to see in ( Bruton - UK )
Bruton is a town in Somerset, southwest England, known for its verdant countryside. On a hill in Jubilee Park, the Dovecote is a former watchtower from the 16th century with views of the town. Hauser & Wirth Somerset, an arts centre in converted farm buildings, hosts modern art exhibitions and seminars. To the east, woodland trails lead to King Alfred’s Tower, a folly commemorating the end of the Seven Years’ War.
Bruton is a small town, electoral ward, and civil parish in Somerset, England, situated on the River Brue along the A359 between Frome and Yeovil. It is 7 miles (11 km) south-east of Shepton Mallet, just south of Snakelake Hill and Coombe Hill, 10 miles (16 km) north-west of Gillingham and 12 miles (19 km) south-west of Frome in the South Somerset district. The town and electoral ward have a population of 2,907. The parish includes the hamlets of Wyke Champflower and Redlynch.
Bruton has a museum dedicated to the display of items from Bruton's past from the Jurassic geology up to the present day. The museum houses a table used by the author John Steinbeck to write on during his six-month stay in Bruton. The River Brue has a long history of flooding in Bruton. In 1768 the river rose very rapidly and destroyed a stone bridge.
It was the site of Bruton Abbey, a medieval Augustinian priory from which a wall remains in the Plox close to Bow Bridge. The priory was sold after the dissolution of the monasteries to the courtier Sir Maurice Berkeley (died 1581) whose Bruton branch of the Berkeley family converted it into a mansion which was demolished in the late eighteenth century.
The Dovecote which overlooks Bruton was built in the sixteenth century. It was at one time used as a house, possibly as a watchtower and as a dovecote. It is a Grade II* listed building and ancient monument. It is managed by the National Trust. The building was once within the deerpark of the Abbey and was adapted by the monks from a gabled Tudor tower.
Bruton was part of the hundred of Bruton. Bruton is referenced in a well-known English folk song, The Bramble Briar. A very rare copy of an Inspeximus of Magna Carta was discovered in Bruton in the 1950s and claimed by King's School, Bruton. The sale of the school's copy to the Australian National Museum paid for a great deal of the building work at the school.
Much of the town's history is exhibited at the Bruton Museum. The museum is housed in the Dovecote Building, in the town's High Street. The building also contains a tourist information office. The Bruton Museum Society was formed in 1989 and involved the community and local schools in the development of the collection of local artefacts. It was initially housed in the basement of the Co-Op and then in a disused Coach House owned by the National Westminster Bank. The museum moved to its current location in 1999 after it was jointly purchased by South Somerset District Council and Bruton Town Council.
Bruton station lies on the Great Western Main Line (in a section often referred to as the Berks and Hants route) between Westbury and Taunton. This route is the most direct between London (Paddington) and the West Country (ending at Penzance), but is slower due to the geographical nature of the route. The stretch between Westbury and Castle Cary is also part of the Heart of Wessex line served by Great Western Railway services between Bristol Temple Meads and Weymouth.
Work to build the railway line at Bruton Railway Cutting exposed geology of the epoch of the Middle Jurassic. It is one of the best places in England to demonstrate the stratigraphic distinction of ammonites in the subcontractus zone and the morrisi zone.
