Pennsylvania, a northeastern U.S. state and one of the 13 original colonies, has a diverse terrain, which includes wide stretches of farmland, national forests and mountains. Philadelphia, the Keystone State’s largest city, displays its rich history in Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, an enduring symbol of American freedom.
Pennsylvania is downright beautiful. It is home to some of the country’s richest history, incredible culture and, yes, a picturesque scenery.
The Appalachian Mountains sit here, and the state has more than 120 state parks, with over 100 miles of coastline, and a varied selection of great towns and cities,
each with its own character.
Mountain climbers will love this state, so will surfers, skydivers and skiers even, depending on where you are in the state.
Little wonder the Keystone State is widely considered one of the best states to retire.
The natural allure aside, this is a notion mostly driven by other key factors for anyone interested in the hard data:
economic vibrancy (this is the sixth largest state economy), good health care, school districts that are a cut above the other states, affordability, low rate of homelessness and a high quality of life.
Here then, are the 10 best places to live in Pennsylvania to help inform your decision better.
1. Pittsburgh.
2. Philadelphia.
3. Penn Wynne.
4. State College.
5. Mount Lebanon.
6. Radnor Township.
7. Bethel Park.
8. West Chester.
9. Emmaus.
10. Philadelphia Main Line .

Let's Visit Point State Park (Pittsburgh, PA)
In this video, I head over to Point State Park, located where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers merge into the Ohio River. The park, built on the grounds where both Fort Duquesne and Fort Pitt were back in the 18th Century, provides great views of the three rivers, a fountain, views of both Heinz Field & PNC Park, and downtown Pittsburgh.
Upper St Clair Community and Real Estate
In the south hills of Pittsburgh, just 10 miles from the city, lies the affluent suburb of Upper St Clair. Ranked among the 10 best places to live in the United States according to U.S. News & World Report, this town's residents are proud of their nationally ranked schools, close-knit community, and small-town way of life.
One of the original townships of Allegheny County, Upper St. Clair was established in 1788 to ensure better government service by separating from the more densely populated northern part of the St. Clair township. The Upper St. Clair Township was further subdivided throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, as several regions of the original township seceded to form new townships and boroughs. Upper St. Clair eventually adopted a home rule charter that took effect in 1976, rendering this community outside the purview of the Pennsylvania Township Code.
Today this township is thriving. A family-oriented oasis with parks, a brand new recreation center, tennis courts, and a country club, Upper St. Clair continues its legacy as the ultimate desirable community, with services and education rivaling any in the state. In fact, the local high school consistently ranks #1 in all of Pennsylvania.
Upper St. Clair is especially known for its grander homes in prestigious neighborhoods such as Deerfield Manor, Westminster Manor, and Trottwood Acres. Indeed, this township has become a prime destination for those who can afford the higher end of luxury living.
If you are in the market for the complete package -- excellent education and services, a tight-knit community, and a luxurious manor home on rolling green hills -- then Upper St. Clair is the place for you.

Pittsburgh's South Hills Neighborhoods: Mount Lebanon, Dormont
This drive explores some of the communities in the South Hills, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The drive begins on Interstate 376, then exits onto Greentree Road. It also covers McMonagle Avenue, Washington Road through Mount Lebanon, McFarland Road and Banksville road. I also paid a visit to the steepest street in America (and maybe the World), Canton Avenue, near the end of the video.
MyDrivelapse.com and Takemytrip.com provide driving videos and stories to help you plan your trip. Check out hundreds of videos on my YouTube channel. Subscribe if you like it! Dozens of new videos are on the way in the coming weeks.
I made this trip in August-September 2017. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).
