We explored the department Valle del Cauca on the pacific coast and checked it out on its potential for bird watching. El Valle del Cauca is another of the 32 Colombian departments, located in the southwest part of the country between the Andes and the Pacific Coast. The area is surrounded by Choco y Risaralda in the North, Qundio y Toima to the east and Choco y the Pacific Ocean to the west. Because of its location near the Pacific Coast, the area houses between 25 and 50% of the country’s fauna and 11% of the country’s flora.
The Valle del Cauca is the second most biodiverse department in Colombia. With over 725 species of marine birds and 100 migratory species, this is an ideal place for Colombia birdwatching. Get your cameras ready for some great Colombia birding photography as well and be sure to check out the rich diversity of amphibians, as the region houses over 130 different species.
The reign’s natural richness is certainly impressive, but it is also an important area of environmental conservation and protection. From the impenetrable jungles and the fast-flowing rivers to the infinite beaches and the most extensive mangroves in South America, the region is certainly one of the best things to do in Colombia for our nature lovers!

Welcome to Colombia
We started our trip along the Colombian Caribbean coast in the department of Atlántico. The department is located in the Caribbean region, it limits to the north by the Caribbean Sea, to the east with the Magdalena River and to the west with the department of Bolívar. We visited its capital, Barranquilla, to learn about the most important folkloric and cultural events as the Carnaval de Barranquilla, declared Masterpiece of the oral and intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003. We also visited the tropical dry forest Luriza, 6km from Usiacurí, In this reserve, 139 species of birds have been identified. 10 specimens of amphibians, 44 of reptiles, 122 of plants and 43 of mammals, among which the red howler monkey stands out. Finally, we finished the first part of our tour along the Colombian Caribbean coast at the club Lagos de Caujaral, an excellent private club where we had the chance to play some Caribbean golf and enjoy some Colombia birding.

La Guajira Punta Gallinas, Cabo la Vela, Parque Macuira Colombia - Como Viajar que visitar ?
El departamento de la Guajira se encuentra ubicado en el noreste de Colombia en la región Caribe. Las zonas desérticas desembocan en el mar Caribe y posee unos paisajes incomparables debido a su diversidad y colores, un destino mágico donde serán testigos de las más antiguas costumbres colombianas, y podrán compartir los secretos de la vida de la comunidad indígena Wayuu. Se puede acceder a este lugar desde la ciudad de Rioacha o Uribia en 4X4.
El cabo de la vela es un lugar maravilloso de playas vírgenes y paradisiacas, un lugar importante para la mitología wayuu, aquí se pueden encontrar varios lugares sagrados como el cerro Kamaichi o el Jepirra, también es un gran centro turístico y atrae a muchos deportistas interesados en kitesurf y windsurf.
La exuberante vegetación y biodiversidad de La Cerranía de Macuira, fuente importante de agua para la zona, posee un ecosistema único debido al contraste entre los bosques, montañas y zonas desérticas. Es un verdadero paraíso, un lugar mítico y sagrado para los indígenas Wayuu.
En Bahía Hondita y Punta Gallinas se pueden apreciar formaciones rocosas de acantilados, paisajes de mangle y dunas de arena. En la zona desértica de la Guajira se pueden observar dunas de arena como las dunas de Taroa que se conectan con las playas vírgenes del caribe, un gran espectáculo para todos aquellos que visitan la Guajira.
La Guajira también es un destino importante para el paso de las aves migratorias y reptiles, es la oportunidad perfecta para conocer la cultura, las tradiciones y disfrutar de paisajes inolvidables y únicos en el mundo.

Desierto de la Tatacoa Huila desde el aire Drone
El desierto de la Tatacoa se encuentra localizado en el departamento del Huila en Colombia; cuenta con una extensión de aproximadamente 330 km2. En el desierto de la tatacoa se han encontrado una gran variedad de restos fósiles; además es el lugar ideal para observar las estrellas y los maravillosos paisajes de suelo árido con diferentes tonalidades de naranjas, rojos, grises y blancos, cactus y el azul del cielo.
Es importante destacar que un gran número de biólogos, antropólogos y paleontólogos de diferentes países visitan este lugar debido a su importancia histórica y cultural. Cabe resaltar que este lugar se adaptó a los cambios climáticos y debido a las altas temperaturas se convirtió en un bosque seco.
Para visitar este maravilloso desierto, es necesario pasar por Neiva capital del departamento del Huila y posteriormente por el municipio de Villavieja, un pueblo de arquitectura colonial, importante en la historia de Colombia.
Los lugares que más se destacan en el desierto de la tatacoa son: el Cuzco, el Cardón, los Hoyos y las lajas; además los viajeros tendrán la oportunidad de visitar el Museo Paleontológico creado en 1984, donde es posible observar una gran variedad de restos fósiles, el observatorio astronómico y la posibilidad de acampar; este es un lugar ideal para los amantes de la astronomía y de la naturaleza.

Viaja a los Cerros de Mavecure y Parque Tuparro. Visitar maravillosos destinos en Colombia
Los Cerros de Mavecure se sitúan en el departamento de Guainía, al Suroriente de Colombia, cerca de las fronteras con Venezuela y Brasil. Los Cerros estan compuestos de 3 montañas de roca granítica: el cerro Parajito a 712m, Monos a 480m y Mavecure a 170m. Se puede acceder por el rio Inirida en aproximadamente dos horas en lancha.
En esta misma región nacen varios ríos, el rio Orinoco, el rio Atabapo, el rio Inirida y el rio Guaviare, formando una Estrella fluvial. Navegando estos ríos en lancha, se pueden observar los maravillosos delfines rosados y grises.
En este lugar se puede vivir una fuerte conexión con los origenes de Colombia, realizando una caminata por los cerros acompañado por un guía, para admirar la impresionante vista panorámica desde la cima.
El Parque Nacional Tuparro se encuentra situado en los llanos Orientales en el departamento del Vichada, en la región de la Orinoquia en Colombia y cuenta con un área de 548.000 hectáreas. Fue declarado Monumento Nacional y Reserva de la Biosfera en 1982; además este hermoso parque cuenta con una extensa sabana verde, ríos, playas doradas, bosques y maravillosos cerros redondeados el cual alberga aproximadamente 320 especies de aves y variedad de especies acuáticas. Viajar Eje Cafetero Colombia - Santuario Parque Nacional Natural Tatamá desde el Aire
El municipio de Santuario, conocido como la joya patrimonial de Risaralda se sitúa en el departamento de Risaralda en Colombia y fue fundado el 20 de julio de 1886. Es un lugar lleno de encanto, debido a su arquitectura colonial con casas coloridas, sus plazas y monumentos; tales como: la calle real, el palacio municipal, el arco de Nuestra Señora del Carmen y el templo de la Inmaculada Concepción.
Cuenta con bosques húmedos premontano con temperaturas que varían entre los 18 y 24 grados y los cultivos de cafe, caña de azúcar, granadilla y plátano, son las actividades agrícolas más importantes para este sector.
Es la oportunidad perfecta para conocer la cultura colombiana y su historia. Sus habitantes tienen un profundo respeto por sus creencias religiosas, son amables, serviciales y trabajadores.
En este territorio se encuentra el Parque Nacional Natural Tatamá un parque muy importante por su biodiversidad, y la belleza de sus paisajes. Cuenta actualmente con 51.900 hectáreas y es un área protegida de interés científico que cuenta con un páramo virgen (Páramo de Tatamá) y variedad de especies animales (oso anteojos, ratón de monte, dantas, puerco espín, pumas, colibríes, ranas, tucán de montaña, etc…) y vegetales (naranjuelo, algarrobo, cedrillo y chontaduro).
Es el lugar perfecto para el ecoturismo, visitar el Parque Tatama y recorrer el sendero de las Cascadas es una experiencia inolvidable para disfrutar de la extraordinaria vegetación.

Nueva Venecia Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta, Barranquilla Costa Caribe COLOMBIA
Video aéreo HD del pueblo palafito de Nueva Venecia en la Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta de Colombia. La Ciénaga está ubicada entre Santa Marta y Barranquilla en la Costa Caribe y es la más grande del país. Es un santuario de aves y peces, un ecosistema muy frágil e importante para la reproducción de las especies que se vio afectado por la construcción de la carretera entre Santa Marta y Barranquilla.
La Cienaga tiene varios pueblos que fueron construidos en medio de la Ciénaga sobre el agua, son los únicos pueblos palafitos de Colombia; es por esto que uno de ellos tiene el nombre de Nueva Venecia. Las calles son de agua y solo se puede desplazar en Canoa, el único puente que existe comunica el colegio y la iglesia. Es un lugar único en Colombia que seguro lo sorprenderá más que cualquier otro.
¿Conoces a Nueva Venecia y la Ciénaga Grande, su fauna y flora, sus pueblos y su gente? ¿Sabías que la Ciénaga es declarada Santuario de Fauna y Flora en Colombia sitio de conservación de sus especies y protección de la naturaleza y su biodiversidad ?
La cienaga Grande de Santa Marta fue creada en 1977 y se encuentra ubicada en el norte de Colombia en el departamento del Magdalena; la temperatura aproximada es de 29°C con un clima cálido seco y cuenta con una extensión de 26.810 hectáreas. Está conformada por: ríos, áreas pantanosas, ciénagas, ecosistemas de manglar y caños; comprende un complejo de aguas de más de 100 ciénagas .
Es un lugar muy importante para la naturaleza debido a que se convierte en el complejo lagunar más grande de Colombia, en el refugio de aves migratorias que vienen especialmente de Norteamérica. La existencia de ecosistemas de manglar son el soporte y la ayuda para las diferentes fases del ciclo de vida de moluscos, crustáceos y peces además se caracteriza por la conservación y estabilidad para la supervivencia de la variedad de especies de la zona y el desarrollo de fauna y flora.
Entre las especies más representativas se pueden encontrar el mico cariblanco, el ratón silvestre, el manatí, la nutria, variedad de murciélagos, caimanes, iguanas y aves exóticas como el pato aguja, la garza morena, el gallito de ciénaga, entre otros.
En este lugar podrá admirar la belleza de los bosques de manglar y los bosques secos tropicales formado por árboles pequeños (el chaparro), enormes fustes del macondo y palmas de vino y palmas largas.

FARALLONES DE CALI
A cluster of mountains in the West Andes of Colombia. It is located west of the city of Cali and gives rise to many of the rivers that provide water and electricity to Cali. The Farallones de Cali national natural park encompasses 150,000 ha (580 sq mi) in the mountains as well as much of the Pacific slope and is an area of very high biodiversity.. The average temperature ranges from 25 °C (77 °F) in the tropical foothills to 5 °C (41 °F) in the páramo.
CLIMATE & TOPOGRAPHY
Average yearly rainfall is 6,000 mm (240 in) in the Pacific region and 2,500 mm (98 in) in the mountainous sector. Plants growing in the area have sufficient water throughout the year.
The topography of the park is characterized by the high, craggy peaks, the highest being 4,050 m (13,290 ft). These peaks are referred to as Los Farallones (which means cliffs), the namesake of the mountains and national park. The foothills on the eastern side meet the Cauca Valley and the city of Cali. On the west slope there are numerous river canyons that wind their way toward the Pacific Ocean.
The Farrallones are visible from the city of Cali.
Rivers
On the east slope the following rivers flow from the Farallones de Cali (from north to south): Cali, Pichindé, Cañaveralejo, Melendez, Lilí, Pance, and Jamundí. These river all flow into the Cauca River.
On the west slope there are many rivers flowing into the Pacific, but the main ones area the Dagua and Anchicayá. There is a hydroelectric dam on the Anchicayá River.
NATIONAL PARK & BIODIVERSITY
It is the largest national park in the Valle del Cauca Department and was formed in 1968. The area is popular for hiking and birdwatching. Access from Cali is by two main routes: by way of the Pance River at the southern end or at the northern end via Peñas Blancas or the Pichindé River. Access to the Anchicayá area is via the town of El Queremal. The lowest altitude of the park is 200 m (660 ft) in the Pacific lowlands.
Ecological Zones
Due to extreme height of the mountains and the nearby Pacific Ocean, which largely determines the climate in western Colombia, there are various ecosystems in the park such as lowland jungle, mountain cloud forest and páramo.
Tropical Wet to Humid Forest is located between 200 m (660 ft) and 1,000 m (3,300 ft) above sea level. It is characterized by tall rain forest trees and a canopy reaching up to 40 m (130 ft). This area is on the western slope of the West Andes and is part of the Chocó Biogeographic Region. One of the key areas of biodiversity is centered around the upper Anchicayá River watershed.
Subtropical Cloud Forest is situated between 1,200 m (3,900 ft) and 2,000 m (6,600 ft). The cloud forest is usually blanketed in fog and inside the forest it is extremely mossy with many epiphytes. This ecosystem is also referred to as Subandean Forest - Bosque Subandino.
Mountain Forest is located between 2,000 m (6,600 ft) and 3,500 m (11,500 ft). It's characterized by dense vegetation and a canopy that reaches up to 20 m (66 ft). As the elevation increases the tree height generally decreases. This ecosystem is also referred to as Andean Forest - Bosque Andino.
Páramo is situated above the treeline at altitudes over 3,500 m (11,500 ft). This ecosystem is geographically isolated from other Northern Andean páramos and is unique in the fact that it does not have the characteristic Espeletia plant of the Colombian páramo.
The ecosystems in the park face several threats including commercial logging, illegal mining, agriculture, tourism, forest fires, hunting and road construction.
Characteristic fauna
Birds
The Farallones de Cali is home to probably more than 300+ species of birds, including several endemic species such as the multicolored tanager (Chlorochrysa nitidissima), crested ant-tanager (Habia cristata) and chestnut wood-quail (Odontophorus hyperythrus). Andean cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus) leks can be observed, the most famous being in the Peñas Blancas area of the Pichindé River valley. The avian diversity of the Anchicayá is world-renowned.
