The wine regions of Bordeaux are a large number of wine growing areas, differing widely in size and sometimes overlapping, which lie within the overarching wine region of Bordeaux, centred on the city of Bordeaux and covering the whole area of the Gironde department of Aquitaine.
The Bordeaux region is naturally divided by the Gironde Estuary into a Left Bank area which includes the Médoc and Graves and a Right Bank area which includes the Libournais, Bourg and Blaye.
The Médoc is itself divided into Haut-Médoc (the upstream or southern portion) and Bas-Médoc (the downstream or northern portion, often referred to simply as Médoc).
There are various sub-regions within the Haut-Médoc, including St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux and the less well known areas of AOC Moulis and Listrac.
Graves includes the sub-regions of Pessac-Léognan and Sauternes (among others), and Sauternes in turn includes the sub-region of Barsac.
The Libournais includes the sub-regions of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol (among others).
There is an additional wine region of Entre-Deux-Mers, so called because it lies between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, which combine to form the Gironde.
This region contains several less well known sweet wine areas of Cadillac and St. Croix de Mont.
All of these regions (except the Libournais) have their own appellation and are governed by Appellation d'origine contrôlée laws which dictate the permissible grape varieties, alcohol level, methods of pruning and picking, density of planting and appropriate yields as well as various winemaking techniques.
Bordeaux wine labels will usually include the region on the front if all the grapes have been harvested in a specific region and the wine otherwise complies with the AOC requirements.
There are about 50 AOCs applicable to the Bordeaux region.
Both red and white Bordeaux wines are almost invariably blended.
The permissible grape varieties in red Bordeaux are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot.
While wine making styles vary, a rule of thumb is that the Left Bank is predominately Cabernet Sauvignon based with the Right Bank being more Merlot based.
The Graves area produces both red wine (from the grapes previously mentioned) and white wine from the Sauvignon blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle grapes.
The area of Sauternes (including Barsac) is known for its botrytized dessert wines.

PROVENANCE (from the French provenir, to come from), is the chronology of the ownership, custody or location of a historical object.
Cos d’Estournel, is a definitive Chateau of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, in Bordeaux, France - a Second Growth in the original Bordeaux Wine Classification of 1855. Cos (the S is pronounced) means a hill of pebbles” and was named so in 1810 by Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel and is presently owned by Michel Reybier who seeks to bring glory to the brand.
The estate controls 100 hectares and is famous for its use of Cabernet and Merlot, and annual production is approx 32,000 cases between all the wines at the property.

Etienne de Nantes started his wine career in 1993 working at Chateau des Antonins, in Bordeaux. He then went on to further explore the industry, studying wine in the Rhone Valley before completing a Masters of Wine Trade in Burgundy. Upon completion of his studies, Etienne worked as a “vigneron”, cellar worker, and a sommelier in Bordeaux and Franschhoek, South Africa. Later, Etienne managed a wine boutique in Bordeaux before working as a négociant specialized in the trade of Grands Crus Classés. Here in the United States, Etienne has worked with Chateau Pontet-Canet and Pichon Comtesse de Lalande.
Today, based in New York City, Etienne is the US Director for the wineries of Michel Reybier, which include Chateau Cos d’Estournel, Chateau Marbuzet, Tokaj Hetszolo and Champagne Michel Reybier.

Ilona and Jim are not Spring Chickens, they've been married for 35 years, and they took up cycling 4 years ago. [9'26] They do have a fair bit of training, but they worked up to 70 or 80 miles per day slowly. [10'31] In France cycling is huge, there are cyclist all over, especially in rural France. Marion Clignet was on Episode 52. [12'28] Why did they choose Provence? Comparing the level of difficulty between different regions of France. [14'43] Choosing bigger roads to go longer distances. Have you used Google Maps' cycling option? Ride with GPS is better because it's more of a community where real people share experiences of cycling. [28'31] How often did you get lost? Letting Garmin select dirt roads as an option. [31'] Getting lost is par for the course when riding or hiking. [31'51] Provence cycling tours day by day itinerary [32'] Fly into Paris CDG, RER train into the city of Paris, then the TGV to Avignon, then a bus to Saint-Rémy de Provence. [32'40] The first leg of cycling was north through Avignon, with Chateauneuf-du-Pape as their destination for the day. That was a lovely ride with lots of vineyards, small roads, beautiful views onto the Rhone Valley. [35'] How did you plan your lunch stops? [36'] Stop at the restaurant Le Pistou in Châteauneuf-du-Pape [37'] Long riding day on Saturday at Lisle-sur-la-Sorgue, Gordes, and Roussillon, which was challenging as far as elevation is concerned. [39'47] Running out of daylight and trying to pack too much into one day because it means there isn't enough time spent at each location. [40'26] Planning overnight stays in a few select places so there's enough time to see it. 75 or 75 miles is too far for an out and back. [41'55] Les Baux-de-Provence, mistral wind and needing to walk. [43'48] Riding to Arles. Valley roads and river roads tend to be flat (unless it's a gorge!)
