Derby is a town in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. At the 2016 census, Derby had a population of 3,325 with 47.2% of Aboriginal descent. Along with Broome and Kununurra, it is one of only three towns in the Kimberley to have a population over 2,000. Located on King Sound, Derby has the highest tides in Australia, with the peak differential between low and high tide reaching 11.8 metres.

    Bicheno is a town on the east coast of Tasmania, Australia, 185 km north-east of Hobart on the Tasman Highway, with a population of around 950. It is part of the municipality of Glamorgan/Spring Bay. The town is primarily a fishing port and a beach resort. The town was named after James Ebenezer Bicheno, the British Colonial Secretary for Van Diemen's Land from 1843 to 1851.     The Boab Prison Tree, Derby is a 1,500 year old, large hollow Adansonia gregorii tree 6 kilometres south of Derby, Western Australia with a girth of 14.7 metres. It had been reputed to have been used in the 1890s as a lockup for indigenous Australian prisoners on their way to Derby for sentencing. There is no evidence that the Derby Prison Tree was ever used for holding prisoners.Kristyn Harman and Elizabeth Grant traced the prison tree myth back to 1948. Around that time, a prominent artist Vlase Zanalis spent eight months camping in and around Derby. Zanalis became intrigued by the region’s extraordinary boab trees.     West Kimberley is part of the Kimberley region within Western Australia, a significant portion of which is heritage-listed for its cultural landscape. It is an area with a wide array of fauna and flora. It connects to a long history of Indigenous Australian culture, language and knowledge. There are 127 Indigenous communities in the West Kimberley, with a further 36 communities within the Fitzroy River Valley sub region. The 420,000 square kilometre region was added to the Australian National Heritage List on 31 August 2011.
