Abandoned Phosphate Mine in Citrus County
This area used to be part of a phosphate mine back in the early 1900's, from what I know it ceased operations around World War I. There is a lot of that kind of history in this area, nature has reclaimed the lands so it looks much different today. Here is some history on the area In 1889 the Dunnellon Phosphate Company purchased 70,000 acres in Marion, Citrus, and Hernando Counties. Mining Operations began early the next year.

Rosewood, Florida, today
I visit Rosewood, Florida, the site of a horrific racist massacre in 1923. A white mob burned down the town belonging to their black neighbors, murdered them, and pillaged their belongings. Little trace is left but people do live there quietly, and I battled the seasonal swarm of lovebugs to shoot video of it. Read about my full visit at
Florida's Suncoast Parkway, Northbound from Tampa to Homosassa
You can avoid a long, slow drive north from Tampa on US 19 by taking the speedy Suncoast Parkway. This drive begins around Tampa International Airport (Hillsborough Avenue) and heads north, first on the Veterans Expressway, which turns into the Suncoast Parkway once you're out of the Tampa area. The Suncoast Parkway ends at US 98, just shy of Homosassa, Florida, at the Sugarmill Woods Publix.
I made this trip in October 2018.

Stroll down the Waccasassa River
This wonderful scenery on the Waccasassa River was great, except for the numerous fallen trees we had to pull our kayak / canoes over. This turned into a nightmare later when the trip lasted twice as long as it was supposed to and we only had a camcorder light to guide us... Don't mind the noises near the end...
Cedar Key Railroad Trestle Nature Trail
In the 1800's this trail used to be a train track and lead to a trestle. The trail is short but worth checking out for the history and scenery. I found some remains from the trestle and railroad along the way.
The first train arrived in Cedar Key on March 1, 1861 and brought with it a new era of prosperity to this island community. Daily passenger and freight services from Fernandina Beach continued until the early 1880s when Henry Plant's railroad bypassed Cedar Key for the larger port of Tampa. Service to the island gradually declined until the last train departed from Cedar Key on July 7, 1932.
The abandoned rail line was quickly reclaimed by native vegetation and wildlife. When development mushroomed again in the late 1990s it became readily apparent that action was needed to preserve some of the pristine habitat areas. The trail project became a viable solution to that need for preservation. Not only did it create a habitat refuge, it also preserved a small piece of Cedar Key's history.
