The Wachau is the most famous stretch of the Danube in Austria, thirty six kilometres of romantic Danube Valley. Today’s townscape of Krems brings back bygone days and a particularly beautifully-preserved street complex. More than a hundred buildings provide an authentic picture of the Old Town. Today, the buildings’ façades and entrances are decorated in the traditional way and show off the town’s splendid Renaissance and mediaeval buildings. Sacred monuments recall the victory of Catholicism over Protestantism following two centuries of hostilities. Up the Danube to Dürnstein, a place with a long history and unique appearance. Arrival by boat is particularly scenic and a jetty leads to a wall from where a gate and steps provide access to the Old Town. The small mediaeval town clings picturesquely to the cliffs above the Danube, guarded by castle ruins and fortified walls. In Roman times, vines were cultivated in this picturesque area due to the region’s ideal growing conditions and Weissenkirchen has always been a wine-growing centre. The steep river valley and its terraced vine gardens enjoy a temperate climate. The small village has a long and dramatic history and its old houses and lanes are indelibly evocative of the past. Spitz is picturesquely embedded within its surrounding vineyards, and the legendary Thousand Bucket Mountain is an imposing sight. It was not only due to wine but also the trading of both wood and salt that Spitz attained an important position in the Middle Ages and at the beginning of modern times. Since the year 2000, the Wachau has been a World Cultural Region, a gem on the long route of the Danube, a picturesque river valley where both mediaeval and Baroque create an exceptional atmosphere, and nature, the perfect setting.

Burg Lockenhaus - Austria HD Travel Channel
Lockenhaus Castle is located in Burgenland in Austria.
The very interesting castle was once in the possession of the Esterházy family. Since 1968, it belongs to the family of Prof. Paul Anton Keller who has invested millions in the restoration of the castle. He has developed the castle into an event and congress center.
Professor Keller has also invested a lot of the time and money in the research of the Knights Templar. An exhibition about the Knights Templar should demonstrate the legend, that the castle was once an Order Castle of the Knights Templar, of which there are quite some indications.
It has been proven that the castle served temporarily as residence for the Hungarian Slovakian countess Erzsébet Báthory, the worst female serial killer of the history.

Burg Lockenhaus liegt im Burgenland in Österreich. Die sehr sehenswerte Burg war einst ebenfalls im Besitz der Familie Esterházy. Seit 1968 gehört sie der Familie Prof. Paul Anton Keller, die Millionen in die Instandsetzung der Burg investiert und sie zum Veranstaltungs- und Kongresszentrum ausgebaut hat.
Eine Ausstellung über die Tempelritter, deren Erforschung Prof. Keller ebenfalls viel Zeit und Geld gewidmet hat, soll die Legende belegen, dass die Burg einst eine Ordensburg der Tempelritter war, wofür einige Indizien sprechen.
Als erwiesen gilt, dass die Burg zeitweilig als Residenz für die ungarisch-slowakischen Gräfin Erzsébet Báthory, der schlimmsten Serienmörderin der Geschichte, diente.

Die Burg Kreuzenstein ist eine mittelalterliche Burganlage,
wenige Kilometer nördlich von Wien - Fantasie !
Die Ursprünge der Burg Kreuzenstein gehen wie die der meisten Burgen in Niederösterreich auf das 12. Jahrhundert zurück. Von den Formbachern erbaut, kam sie durch Heirat in den Besitz der Grafen von Wasserburg. Über Ottokar II. von Böhmen gelangte die Burg 1278 in den Besitz der Habsburger.
Bis zum Dreißigjährigen Krieg wurde sie nie erobert. Dann allerdings fiel sie in die Hände des schwedischen Feldmarschalls Lennart Torstensson und wurde bei seinem Abzug 1645 an drei (andere Quellen sprechen von vier) Stellen gesprengt.
Als Ruine kam die Burg im 18. Jahrhundert in den Besitz der Grafen Wilczek, welche ein großes Vermögen durch ihre Kohlengruben in Schlesien angehäuft hatten. Der als Polarforscher bekannt gewordene Johann Nepomuk Graf Wilczek begann ab 1874 an derselben Stelle schrittweise eine Schauburg aufzubauen, die zwar im Aussehen keineswegs der ehemaligen Burg entspricht (romanisch-gotische Musterburg), aber die vorhandenen Reste der mittelalterlichen Burg (vor allem Teile der Ringmauer, Rumpf des Ostturmes und Teile der Kapelle) in die Gestaltung miteinbezieht.
Die gesamte Burg wurde zum einen aus bzw. auf den Resten der mittelalterlichen Burg,
zum anderen aus einer Vielzahl originaler Bauteile errichtet, die Wilczek aus ganz Europa zusammengetragen hatte. Zudem wurde die Burg mit einer großen Sammlung mittelalterlicher Einrichtungsgegenstände und Artefakte ausgestattet, z.B. mit einer ältesten erhaltenen mittelalterlichen Steinschleudern, die aus der Festung Hohensalzburg angekauft wurde.
Die Arbeiten dauerten 30 Jahre - bei der offiziellen Neueröffnung am 6. Juni 1906 war unter anderem Kaiser Wilhelm II. von Deutschland anwesend.
Bei den Kampfhandlungen im Jahr 1945 zwischen der deutschen Wehrmacht und der Roten Armee wurde ein Teil der Räume stark beschädigt und viele Stücke der Sammlung gestohlen. Von den Handschriften der Sammlung Wilczek befinden sich etliche inzwischen in der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek.
Auf Kreuzenstein wurden einige Filme produziert: 1956 drehte der österreichische Regisseur Willi Forst hier einige Szenen seines Heimatfilms Kaiserjäger sowie 1967 der Regisseur Adrian Hoven den Horrorfilm Im Schloss der blutigen Begierde. In den 1970ern folgten weitere Horrorfilme (z. B. 1970 die deutsche Vampirkomödie Gebissen wird nur nachts von Freddie Francis und 1972 der italienische Horrorfilm Baron Blood von Mario Bava), sowie der Softpornostreifen Die Stoßburg von Franz Marischka. Des Weiteren wurden Teile des deutschen Films Die Einsteiger hier gedreht. Auch zwei Tom-Turbo-Folgen hatten die Burg als Schauplatz. 2004 wurde ein Teil des Films Henker hier gedreht und 2006 eine Musik-DVD der deutschen Gregorianik-Pop-Gruppe Gregorian aufgenommen. Auch der Disney-Film Die drei Musketiere wurde teilweise auf der Burg gedreht. Die Tatsache, dass Kreuzenstein eine sogenannte Schauburg ist, hat immer wieder Filmemacher auf dieses Kleinod aufmerksam gemacht. 2008 wurde die Burg Kreuzenstein erneut als Filmkulisse für die 2011 erschienene amerikanische Produktion Der letzte Tempelritter mit Nicholas Cage genutzt. In dem deutsch-kanadischen mehrteiligen Fernsehfilm Die Säulen der Erde diente Ken Folletts gleichnamiger Roman als Vorlage und die Burg als Kulisse. Mit Rufus Sewell, Matthew Macfadyen, Ian McShane in den Haupt- und Donald Sutherland in einer Nebenrolle begannen 2009 hier die Dreharbeiten.

Burg Kreuzenstein is a castle near Leobendorf in Lower Austria, Austria.
It was constructed on the remains of an early medieval castle that had fallen into disrepair and was then demolished during the Thirty Years' War.
Intended to be a family vault for the Wilczek family, it was rebuilt in the 19th century by Count Nepomuk Wilczek with money from the family's large Silesian coal mines. Kreuzenstein is interesting in that it was constructed out of sections of medieval structures purchased by the family from all over Europe to form an authentic-looking castle.
Thus, the castle can be considered both a 'neo-' and 'original' medieval structure.
The castle is sometimes used as a location for films.
This castle is sometimes confused with the medieval castle Burg Liechtenstein, where the movie The Three Musketeers was filmed in 1993.
