12 - Yangshuo - China
Yangshuo County lies in the southeastern region in China. This county is regarded as one of the most beautiful counties in China and pictures on Instagram prove why! Ever since being featured on 'Lonely Planet' wayyy back in 1980, the town became popular with foreign backpackers, and organized tours began to arrive by the late 1990s. Today, the town is a popular resort destination for both domestic and foreign travelers.
The rippling Li River traverses the county and creates a one-of-a-kind vista. But the special geography isn’t the only thing that gives this place its amazing beauty – over 1,400 years’ worth of history makes Yangshuo a truly unique destination. You can tell that a sightseeing destination has hit the big time when it appears on a banknote! The Li River and the soaring scenery around Yangshuo are featured on the 20-yuan bill, along with Mao Zedong himself. 11 - Lake Baikal - Russia
Lake Baikal is a rift lake in Russia, or more specifically, in southern Siberia. It’s the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world, containing 22–23% of the world's fresh surface water – that’s almost one-fifth of the world’s fresh water! With 5,670 cubic miles of fresh water, it contains more water than all of the North American Great Lakes combined! With a maximum depth of 5,387 feet, Baikal is the world's deepest lake. It’s considered among the world's clearest lakes and at 25-30 million years, it’s also considered the world's oldest lake! Baikal’s high biodiversity includes over 3,600 plant and animal species, most of which are endemic to the lake. Apart from the amazing nature surrounding the lake, during the colder months, the ice on Lake Baikal in many areas is completely transparent, making for some great looking shots for any photographer!
10 - Pamukkale - Turkey
Pamukkale literally means cotton castle in Turkish – and is the perfect name for this natural site in southwestern Turkey that looks like any girl’s Instagram paradise! The area is famous for its carbonate mineral formations left by the flowing water. The Turkish name refers to the surface of the shimmering, snow-white limestone pools, shaped over millennia by calcium-rich springs. Dripping slowly down the vast mountainside, mineral-rich waters foam and collect in terraces, spilling over cascades of stalactites into the milky pools below. The ancient Greco-Roman city of Hierapolis was built on top of the “cotton castle” which, in total, is about 8,860 feet long, 1,970 feet wide and 525 feet high. It’s so big and bright, it can actually be seen from the hills on the opposite side of the valley in the town of Denizli. Together with Hierapolis, Hierapolis-Pamukkale was made a World Heritage Site in 1988.
9 - La Muralla Roja - Spain
Projecting from the cliffs on the border of the Mediterranean in Spain, La Muralla Roja or The Red Wall, is a bold apartment complex with breathtaking seaside views. Completed in the 1970s, Ricardo Bofill designed this playfully erratic fortress with no less than 50 apartments! At first glance, it’s easy to get lost in what looks like a colorful labyrinth. But, no matter how boisterous its personality may seem, its layout strictly conforms to the precise shape of the Greek cross. Each arm of the cross intersects at the service towers that contain kitchens and bathrooms. Heavily influenced by the architecture of the Arab Mediterranean Area, this housing project is a modern interpretation of a typical casbah – think back to Disney’s Aladdin and its walled citadel housing style.

My trip to Farewell Canyon. Located in the Chilcotin region of British Columbia Canada, Farewell Canyon is an incredible place to hike, spend the day and enjoy the amazing landscape. With the beautiful green river flowing past, the grass lands all around and the large sand dune in the middle, you will feel like you are in a different part of the world.

Peace River, originally named Peace River Crossing, and known as Rivière-la-Paix in French,[7] is a town in northwestern Alberta, Canada, situated along the banks of the Peace River, at its confluence with the Smoky River, the Heart River and Pat's Creek. It is located 486 kilometres (302 mi) northwest of Edmonton, and 198 kilometres (123 mi) northeast of Grande Prairie, along Highway 2. It was known as the Village of Peace River Crossing between 1914 and 1916.[2]
The Peace River townsite is nearly 1,000 feet (300 m) below the relatively flat terrain surrounding it. Pat's Creek used to be an open channel though the town but is now a channeled though a culvert under the town streets, re-emerging at the mouth on the Peace River at the Riverfront Park.
The population in the Town of Peace River was 6,729 in 2011, a 6.6% increase over its 2006 population.[4][6] There are significant nodal settlements and subdivisions in the vicinity of the town on acreages along Highway 2 to the west, Highways 684 (Shaftesbury Trail)[8] and 743[9] as well as the southwest portion of Northern Sunrise County. Regionally, there are various First Nation communities to the northeast, French-Canadian farming communities to the south and to the east, and Mennonite and Hutterite German-Canadian farming communities to the north and northwest of the town.
Peace River was the site of the 2004 Alberta Winter Games. In 2010, Peace River, in conjunction with Grimshaw and surrounding municipalities, jointly hosted the 2010 Alberta Summer Games. These Games are held every two years and are Alberta's largest sporting event. - Wikipedia
Leaving Banff
Tuesday 18th Aug 2009
Up well before dawn to see Venus and a very old crescent moon hanging in the gathering light of dawn. A spectacular sight over forest. Hit the road and by the time I got to the Athabasca glacier (only about half an hour later) the sky was clouding in. In the grey light I was the first in the glacier car park. Flight conditions were near perfect. The short walk up to the glacier was made more fun by the 1980 marker (about the last time I stood here) some 300m short of the present end of the glacier. Flight went well, very well. The glacier was big and open, and bar crashing on the glacier there was little that you could do wrong, although it was clear from my shortness of breath that this place was quite high. Landing was sloppy given the excellent conditions. Headed back to the Wilcox pass trailhead (it was originally the plan to do this first, but the glacier was just too much of a target of opportunity). I had bumped into some guy at Lake Louise the day before who had given the trail rave reviews as the hike to put all other hikes to shame. On the trail by 8.30, that put me at the second person on the trail. The hike was steep in the trees to begin with, and the weather cool, and increasing gloomy as the cloud cover increased. After only about half an hour I had cleared the trees and there were excellent views of the icefields opposite. However as I neared the top of the pass this was largely obscured by hills in the foreground. On what I assumed was the pass the path forked (unlabelled) with one path apparently heading on over the pass (still somewhat up) but it was difficult to contrive there would be any great views that way, or up onto one of the hills. I elected the hills path. By now it was not only almost completely cloudy but there had been spots of rain and the wind had gotten up and at times was giving exceptionally strong gusts (40 +mph). On the summit there was a good view of the icefields, although not that much better than just above the treeline. I stopped there to scoff what little food I had tossed into the backpack in my hurry to get going. Even with all the kit I was wearing, the wind was beginning to find purchase and I was getting cold (having been initially too hot when I started). The wind seemed to be lighter here, although it was still highly variable. Shortly after I got the plane into the air it got VERY windy, to the point where even at full throttle I was barely making any progress. While the recovery prospects were essentially 100% it was still a very hairy flight (even at only a couple of minutes). Indeed shortly after the wind got up it was simply a battle to get the plane back.
On the summit I had got pretty cool, but the heat soon came back as I started down. Went up to see if there was anything further up nearer the top of the very flat pass. After a km or so I decided it was going nowhere and headed back (the correct choice as it turns out, the path just looks round the back of a mountain). Back down by 11.30ish. Hit the icefields visitors center. It was a stunning place, you go through the door of this building, which is frankly like a building in the middle of nowhere and its like walking into a busy airport. I had a quick chat with one of the guys at the info desk before bailing. Took the drive back down the Icefields highway fairly leisurely, stopping frequently (the wind was up all the way back down the valley). Just driving through Banff is an exceptional experience. Set the GPS to get me to Dumheller. Stopped at a safeway just north of Calgary at about 6ish where I pugged in and made a video till they kicked me out when they shut(! Yeah they actually closed!!) at 10ish. Went about 10minutes till I was in a massive thunderstorm and could barely see anything. That was it.. I was tired and couldnt take that so I found some quiet siding (this was actually quite hard to do in Albertas flat lands where there is basically the straight road and a few turn offs for farms however fate smiled on me and I got lucky!). Kipped down for the night with trucks hammering by every 10 minutes or so. A little unsettling, but there were no sensible alternatives.
