The Wheatbelt is one of nine regions of Western Australia defined as administrative areas for the state's regional development, and a vernacular term for the area converted to agriculture during colonisation. It partially surrounds the Perth metropolitan area, extending north from Perth to the Mid West region, and east to the Goldfields-Esperance region. It is bordered to the south by the South West and Great Southern regions, and to the west by the Indian Ocean, the Perth metropolitan area, and the Peel region. Altogether, it has an area of 154,862 square kilometres . The region has 43 local government authorities, with an estimated population of 75,000 residents. The Wheatbelt accounts for approximately three per cent of Western Australia's population.

Wave Rock is a natural rock formation that is shaped like a tall breaking ocean wave. The wave is about 15 m high and around 110 m long. It forms the north side of a solitary hill, which is known as Hyden Rock. This hill, which is a granite inselberg, lies about 3 km east of the small town of Hyden and 296 km east-southeast of Perth, Western Australia. Wave Rock and Hyden Rock are part of a 160 ha nature reserve, Hyden Wildlife Park. A wall lies above Wave Rock about halfway up Hyden Rock and follows the contours of the wall. It collects and funnels rainwater to a storage dam. The wall and dam were constructed in December 1928 by the Public Works Department for the original settlers of East Karlgarin District. The Humps is a granite rock formation known as a stepped bornhardt inselberg. It is located within The Humps Nature Reserve approximately 295 kilometres east of Perth and 17 kilometres north east of Hyden in the eastern wheatbelt region of Western Australia.Rising about 80 metres above the surrounding plains, The Humps is one of numerous rock formations in the area. Approximately 15 kilometres to its south is Hyden Rock whose northern side features the Wave Rock formation. Also in the area are Scrivener Rocks and Camel Peaks roughly 13 kilometres west of The Humps, Anderson Rocks about 19 kilometres north, and King Rocks approximately 18 kilometres east of The Humps.

Kokerbin Rock, also known as Kokerbin Hill, is a granite rock formation located within the Kokerbin Nature Reserve in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. The area has special significance for Noonga. There are claims that Kokerbin Rock is the third largest monolith in Australia, with Mount Wudinna in South Australia being the second largest and Uluru in the Northern Territory being the largest. The Kokerbin Nature Reserve is approximately 40 km east of Quairading and 30 km south of Kellerberrin by road.

Shire of Merredin

The town of Merredin is a thriving regional centre, centrally located between Perth and Kalgoorlie; 257kms from Perth (via the Great Eastern Highway) and 334kms from Kalgoorlie. Merredin services a hinterland of over 15,000 people and is the regional base for government and commercial organisations, and supports quality facilities for business, education, health, transport, recreation and tourism.

The Shire of Merredin covers an area of 3,372 sq kms, incorporating the townsites of Burracoppin, Muntadgin, Hines Hill and the localities of Goomarin, Korbel, Nangeenan, Nokanning, Norpa, Nukarni, South Burracoppin, and Tandegin.

The Council strives to encourage a vibrant community that offers a comprehensive range of local and regional services. Its aim is to work with all communities in the Central Wheatbelt to support quality of life as well as economic and social development within the region.

When War Came To Merredin

The Central Eastern Wheatbelt played a significant role in preparing for the defence of Australia in World War 2. Merredin hosted an Army Field Hospital and many RAAF installations.

Australian General Army Hospital
Located off Benson Rd, The remains of the former field Hospital that was relocated to Merredin from Gaza Ridge, Palestine in 1942 can be viewed in native bushland adjacent to Merredin Peak.

Aviation Fuel Tanks
These tanks can be viewed from the car park of the BP Roadhouse on the Great Eastern Highway. Part of a home has been built on top of the aviation fuel tanks which sit partly above and partly below ground.

RAAF No10 Stores Depot
Located on the Nungarin Merredin Road / Railway Ave. These igloo shaped hangars were part of the RAAF No10 Stores Depot commenced in 1943. The Depot held bulk and technical stores, especially radar and radio spares. Sheets of tin placed on the ground helped camouflage the site as a salt lake. RAAF personnel lived in nearby houses with vegetable gardens and flowers beds rather than barracks, also as a camouflage technique.

At one time it was the centre of gold mining activity but as finds were made further east, it slipped back into being more of a sleepy backwater.

Other townsites in the Shire include Bodallin, Bullfinch, Ghooli, Koolyanobbing, Marvel Loch, Moorine Rock and Yellowdine.

Mining and agriculture co-exist in this area and gold, gypsum, salt and iron are mined while grain, wool, sheep, cattle and pigs are farmed.

Mundijong - Western Australia

Mundijong is a centre for dairy cattle, beef, cheese making and horse breeding.

Located near the South West Highway not far from the major centre of Rockingham, it is becoming a popular place to live as it still retains much of the original country charm. Sadly with more people moving into the area this is something that will gradually be lost.
