Coral Bay is a small town on the coast of Western Australia, 1,200 kilometres north of Perth. The main industries are tourism and fishing. The electricity for the town is provided by a wind-diesel hybrid system. The Ningaloo Reef is a popular diving and snorkelling site with a large variety of coral and fish life and is one of the best places to see whale sharks and manta rays. The migration of the humpback whales is also viewable from June to October. The first Europeans to visit the area were the crew of the schooner Maud that landed in 1884.     The Ningaloo Coast is a World Heritage Site located in the north west coastal region of Western Australia. The 705,015-hectare heritage-listed area is located approximately 1,200 kilometres north of Perth, along the East Indian Ocean. The distinctive Ningaloo Reef that fringes the Ningaloo Coast is 260 kilometres long and is Australia's largest fringing coral reef and the only large reef positioned very close to a landmass.The coast and reef draw their name from the Australian Aboriginal Wajarri language word ningaloo meaning promontory, deepwater, or high land jutting into the sea. The Yamatji peoples of the Baiyungu and Yinigudura clans have inhabited the area for over 30,000 years.

    Yardie Creek or Yardie Creek Station is a pastoral lease and sheep station located in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia. It is situated approximately 12.5 kilometres west north west of Exmouth and 143 kilometres north of Coral Bay. The area was under pastoral lease beginning in 1876 when J Brockman acquired leases in the area covering North West Cape to run cattle. Brockman sold parts of the lease in 1888 to ornithologist Thomas Carter including Yardie Creek, Exmouth Gulf and Ningaloo Station. Carter was the first settler in the area and established a pastoral station in 1889 grazing sheep.
