Alaska Highway Detour - Dinosaurs, Dams, Chainsaw Carvings, and Future Flooding | GO NORTH EP. 7
Alaska Highway Detour - Dinosaurs, Dams, Chainsaw Carvings, and Future Flooding | GO NORTH EP. 7
When traveling without set schedules we highly recommend taking detours to out of the way places when you can. This section of our journey was just that, a large detour to check out some small towns that we would not have normally made it to. It turned out these places were amazing and each had something special. Tumbler Ridge BC was our first stop and we were surprised to find a community offering tons of outdoor recreation. There was an immense amount of hiking, biking, off roading, skiing and more that we would love to come back someday to check out. What we did have time for was a stop at their dinosaur discovery center and to go find some dinosaur footprints nearby as they are a hotspot for dinosaur discoveries and are the center of an international Geopark. Next on the drive was Chetwynd, which supprised us as they were known for being the chainsaw capital of the world with amazing carvings everywhere! This town is worth a stop for sure to spend some time marveling at these amazing pieces of art. Lastly on our detour we stopped by the Hudsons Hope and took a tour of the WAC bennett dam. This area is located on the peace river and generates a lot of British columbia's power. We also learned about the site C project that will flood the last remaining peace river valley. Overall this detour was very neat and we would recommend these towns to anyone with a sense of adventure looking for an out of the way spot to check out!

Prince George, British Columbia, Canada
Recently our small band of friends traveled south from Dawson Creek to Prince George, BC, Canada. We (Charlie & Jeannie, Charlie & Patti, Denny & Claire) spent our first night boondocking in a Walmart, and were met by another of our Alaska Tour friends from New Zealand, Phil & Marit Shaw!
While in the Walmart parking lot, Phil & Charlie had a great time throwing a Frisbee around followed by Movie Night at Phil & Marit’s trailer!
The next day we caravanned to a local campground to stay the night and replenish our tanks. This was sadly our last night all together so we had one last Pot Luck dinner and gave each other hugs as we each head our own way south toward home!

Sparwood BC (British Columbia) Canada - Driving in Coal Mining Town - Large Green Truck
We are driving in the district municipality of Sparwood, British Columbia, Canada. It's located pretty close to Alberta.
Sparwood has a big green truck parked across from its supermarket (once upon a time, it was the largest truck in the world).

Fort Nelson & Dawson Creek, BC, Canada - Alaska Highway
Today we continued our mini-caravan south thru Fort Nelson, BC, Canada to Dawson Creek, BC.
In Fort Nelson we spent the night and visited the Fort Nelson Museum. This was a fantastic museum filled with everything imaginable! We were able to meet the man who had spent most of his life collecting all of the memorabilia! He had a little of everything from local artifacts to many old cars. Trisha was able to sweet talk him into giving her a ride in his Model T!
The next day we continued our journey to Dawson Creek which is ‘Mile 0’ of the Alaska Highway! There we boondocked in at a Walmart for 2 nights and had a Pot Luck dinner right in the parking lot where I attached the ‘Alaska’ sticker to the map on the back of my camper! We also visited their ongoing ‘Dawson Creek Fall Fair and Stampede’. At the Stampede (Rodeo) we saw lots of rides and a great Rodeo including Cattle Roping and Bull Riding! We also watched a band that featured the lead singer playing a Base guitar hand made out of a Chevy gas tank – which sounded great!!
After the rodeo, we re-connected with some of our other Alaska Tour friends at a local campground and had a great Pot Luck dinner including Elk Burgers!
