Montserrat is a multi-peaked mountain range near Barcelona, in Catalonia, Spain. It is part of the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range. The Aeri de Montserrat is an aerial cable car which provides one of the means of access to the Montserrat mountain and abbey. It can be found near the city of Barcelona, Catalonia. Travelers using the cable car should take note of its operating hours to avoid being stranded on the mountain, as it is operated by a separate company than the rack railroad and funiculars, and is not coordinated with them. The line runs from the monastery to the station of Montserrat-Aeri, on the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya line from Barcelona-Plaça d'Espanya station to Manresa. The Santa Cova de Montserrat , is the hillside cave on Montserrat where the Virgin of Montserrat was traditionally hidden during the Moorish invasions and later discovered by shepherds in 880. Its discovery made Montserrat into a pilgrimage destination, and led to the founding of the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey. The sanctuary of the Santa Cova is accessed by a path, called the Camí de la Santa Cova, carved along the ridge of the mountain. It was built between 1691 and 1704, thanks to the patronage of Gertrudis de Camporrell, marquess of Tamarit. Between 1896 and 1916, a series of sculptures were places along the camí, dedicated to the rosary and the 15 mysteries of the Virgin, including works by Antoni Gaudí, Josep Puig i Cadafalch and other modernista artists.

My cousin and I visited our grandparents on an island called Montserrat. It's located in the West Indie islands of the Caribbean. Many people have never heard of this country because half the island was destroyed by the island's volcano. It's a beautiful place that you should all check out one day!

Step 1: take train R5 from Espanya station in Barcelona
Step 2: stop at Aeri to take the cable cars or stop at Monistrol to take the train (Cremallera to go up)

When you're visiting Barcelona it's an absolute must to pay a visit to the Montserrat mountain range as well. It's just 45 minutes on train from the Barça center.

At Montserrat, which literally translates into sawtooth mountain, you can find the Benedictine Abbey Santa Maria de Montserrat, which hosts the Virgin of Montserrat.

Montserrat is one incredibly beautiful mountainous Caribbean island, part of the Lesser Antilles chain and a British Overseas Territory. Sadly Its Soufrière Hills volcano first erupted in the 1990s, causing devastation to the southern part of the island which is now an exclusion zone. The north part of the island is largely unaffected, and has unique black sand beaches, coral reefs, breath taking cliffs, shoreline caves and a new city.

Visitors are politely told that Montserrat is not a volcano; it has a volcano and assured that the north part of the Island remains entirely safe, with the Soufrière Hills volcano is under round-the-clock monitoring by a MVO “Montserrat volcano observatory”. As is often the way in the aftermath of disaster, the close-knit community has forged stronger bonds than ever. Crime is a rarity, front doors and vehicles are unlocked, with the PEOPLE making the island magical. For first-time visitors to the Caribbean island of Montserrat, some of the local vocabulary evokes Geology 101. Words like “pyroclastic flow,” “seismic” and “dome collapse” pop up often in conversations with native islanders and longtime residents.

There is much to do in Montserrat other that visiting volcano devastation exclusion zones, there is epic nature hiking trails, black sand beaches, even a nice hike that will take you to the only white sand beach on the island.
