Tarragona - Santa Tecla 2017
23rd September 2017, day of Santa Tecla, the patroness of Tarragona.
Images of some of the most significant moments of the Festival of Santa Tecla, the most important festivity of this town of Catalonia.
Curious blend of the religious with the profane, an explosive popular retinue between the Square of the Fountain and the Square of the Cathedral, in the morning (for going to the religious Service in the cathedral) and in the afternoon (for going to the solemn Vespers also in the cathedral) takes an unusual carnival dimension, with the fires thrown by devils, the bursting of the bangers, the smoke, the hissing sounds, the bestiary, the giants and the cabezudos, the musical and dancing groups' performances, the walking human towers, the colourful catalan folklore. During the break, the Square of the Fountain is stage for the construction of human towers by four groups of castellers. In the evening, the popular retinue precedes the Procession of the Arm of Santa Tecla, where the archbishop and the local authorities take part. The gold and silver relicary containing a bone of the arm of the saint is taken out of the cathedral and there returns after going through some streets of the historic city center. At last, human towers rise in front of the cathedral and remain still in the middle of the pyrotechnic show of light, smoke and noise, while on the Rambla Nova, the main avenue, people begin dancing the sardanes, traditional dances of Catalonia.
This festival was marked by a noisy demontration in favour of Catalonia independence.
