The Barcelona Metro is a network of underground railway that serves the cities Catalan in Barcelona, Hospitalet de Llobregat, Esplugas de Llobregat, Cornellà de Llobregat, San Baudilio de Llobregat, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, San Adrian del Besos, Badalona and Moncada and Reixach. With 11 lines and a network length of 123.5 km, is the second network meter largest in Spain after the Madrid.
In 2012, the Barcelona Metro network was used by 411.7 million passengers ( 1,127,945 passengers / day ), that were transported by the two operators that exploit the network, Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona and Railways Generalitat of Catalonia.
On December 30, 1924 the Infante Ferdinand of Bavaria, on behalf of King Alfonso XIII inaugurated the first metro line, known as Greater Metro, which ran between Lesseps and Catalonia, with 2,470 km long and 4 seasons. On May 31, 1925 opened the Fontana station of Great Metro, located between the stations Lesseps and Diagonal, which are separated by 1,362 miles away.
During the years 1970, 1980 and 1990 the Barcelona Metro network underwent major additions, many of which are located in municipalities in the metropolitan area. In the early 1980s, with the establishment of democracy in Spain, the metro network was transferred to the Government of Catalonia and Barcelona City, and created the entity Transports Municipals de Barcelona to operate the network.
The December 13, 2009 was inaugurated the line 9 with five stations located in the municipality of Santa Coloma de Gramenet, from Can Zam until Peixauet, the first automatic metro line in Spain. Three days after the opening of line 9, on 16 December, the Government of Catalonia and Barcelona Metropolitan Transport put into operation the second automatic metro line in Spain, line 11, which opened in 2003 and since 2007 it was preparing for its automation.
The Barcelona Metro network has 165 stations, six of which are shared by two lines, ie use the same track and platform. The décor of stations, information boards and different signaling is different by the operator that manages it.
The stations are announced in the car by two different speakers. Here speaker A says first Proxima estació (Next Station), speaker B station's name, then follow with the necessary interchanges. The speaker pair A and B consists of a male and a female Part On most lines of Part A of a man, the Part B is spoken by a woman, on the other hand, one line is reversed. The interchanges are always announced by a man. Another special feature is that all the metro trains are fully air conditioned.
Metropolitan Barcelona is best known for organizing principle of embarkation and disembarkation of passengers, called Barcelona's Spanish or solution. The principle of this is that the stations constructed three platforms: two onshore and one island - and the passenger can enter the car and get out of it on both sides, reducing the waiting time for trains at stations and hustle.
Most of the transitions between the stations were uncomfortable long, narrow, and passengers pass them towards each other. In addition, they sometimes little thought: to go from station to station sometimes you have to go through two successive transitions. The same situation if necessary, go to the train station with the metro stations have to go right 2 transition. At some crossings and stations stuffy and hot. This is due to the fact that Barcelona's subway trains are not air-conditioned and all stations works well enough ventilation.
The city of Barcelona is where most of the metro stations, however in the mid 2000s there were still 14 of the 73 districts had no subway service or TMB or FGC, Neither service commuter Catalonia. This results with that of the 10 districts of the city, six had an area or district with public transport deficit.
All metro and suburban rail must be accessible to people with reduced mobility, and numerous stations are being adapted with the installation of elevators at least one of its entrances and platforms adapted to the height of the door trains.
In 2009, inspectors checked the metro ticket to almost five million passengers with the result that 55,000 had not, this means that 1.1% of users take the subway without paying, that is, 13,000 every day.
In 2010, the Catalan police received 60 complaints per day robberies in the metro, especially in the L3 and summer L4 lines. According to the Japanese one in three Japanese that visit Barcelona have been victims of robbery in the metro.
