With its close proximity to Houston (just north about an hour up I-45/I-75), Huntsville State Park is an easy to reach state park that offers camping, hiking, fishing, paddling, geocaching and just plain relaxing all in the shade of the beautiful East Texas forest. This state park is located just outside of the Sam Houston National Forest and is a great place to spend a day, a weekend or a week out in nature.
In this video, we show you around Huntsville State Park and introduce you to our new friends, Bruce and Judy, who have been volunteering here at Huntsville State Park as park hosts for the past 3 years. They share their experiences as park hosts with us as well as how you can get involved if you are interested in park hosting, volunteering or donating to Texas State Parks. Tyler State Park
Tyler State Park
Tyler State Park is located in Tyler, Texas, one of the cities in the piney woods of East Texas. The Two Tired Teachers visited Tyler State Park, a huge state park with 7 camping areas plus cabin and screened shelter areas.
The park has sites that are full hookup, water and electric, and tent sites, making it a great park for RV camping in Texas or tent camping in Texas.
The city of Tyler is known as the rose capital of Texas. Tyler is known throughout the state for its roses. They are beautiful and plentiful here. One of the best places to see them is at the Tyler Rose Garden, a free garden or park area in Tyler.
Another interesting thing the Two Tired Teachers visited was Camp Ford in Tyler, TX. Camp Ford is what's left of a Confederate Army Prisoner of War Camp from the Civil War. Going into Camp Ford is a sheltered area with tons of information about the Civil War in general and specifically about Camp Ford. At one time, the POW camp held over 5,000 Union prisoners of war.
Other attractions that the Two Tired Teachers weren't able to see on this trip include the Tiger Refuge that's about 5 miles from the park. The admission fee is $17 per person for adults.
Another thing that we missed on this trip was the Canton first Monday Trade Day. It's like a giant flea market with tents and sites set up on acres and acres. They have many different items, and it's fun to walk around and see what's there.
Tyler State Park does have boat rental, paddle board, kayak, and canoes. The most expensive of those is the boat rental for $35 per day in the summer of 2017. The boat is a boat with oars.
Tyler State Park is a Texas State Park with trail map. Not all parks have trail maps, but Tyler has more than 10 miles of trails.
The park has a spring fed lake which means the water is somewhat cool and perfect for swimming.
RVing in Tyler State Park was a perfect way for the Two Tired Teachers to end the summer of 2017.
