San Antonio officially the City of San Antonio, is the seventh most populous city in the United States. Founded as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost in 1718. It is situated at the headwaters of the San Antonio River on the Balcones Escarpment. San Antonio’s character is a colorful blend of Mexican and Texan culture. HISTORY
In 1691, a group of Spanish Catholic explorers and missionaries came upon the river and Payaya settlement on June 13, the feast day of St. Anthony of Padua. They named the place and river San Antonio in his honor. Father Antonio de Olivares visited the site in 1709, and he was determined to found a mission and civilian settlement there.

POPULATION
San Antonio is the ninth-most populated city in the country. San Antonio has a large Hispanic population with a significant African American population. Christianity is the most prevalently practiced religion in San Antonio. The largest Christian denomination in the city is the Catholic Church (32.1%). Islam is the second largest religion in San Antonio (1.2%). Buddhism, Sikhism, and Hinduism have a significant presence in San Antonio.
