Australia's Golden Outback
A six hour drive inland from Perth, the most isolated city in the world, lies a landscape that is unlike anything in the world. Welcome to Australia's Golden Outback.
In December 2018 I was commissioned to create a number of tourism videos for this region bursting with gold mining history in Western Australia.
On the side of that project I decided to create a cinematic experience of our travels. Pictured in this travel film you will find scenes from Kalgoorlie, Lake Ballard and Kookynie.
Check out my friends who were part of the trip and helped out with some of the footage:

One famous Lucky Bay Kangaccino, please | Just another day in Western Australia
In Lucky Bay, locals Doc and Robyne Reynolds happily share the beach with a bunch of beach-loving kangaroos. Look out for their distinctive blue coffee van, where they offer up fresh coffees and homemade damper to enjoy with one of the best views you’ll ever experience.

12th July 2013 Packing after 12 hrs Rain on the Connie Sue Hwy
It rained solidly for 12 hours overnight, about 1.5 inches we think. I was worried we wouldn't get out if we waited too long and let it soak in.
The ground out in the red centre can be very hungry and once the water soaks in you can wait weeks to be able to get out of some places. It will swallow up most vehicles.
We needed to hit the road asap, wet or not. I'm hoping there was less rain further South and that there were no salt lakes to traverse otherwise Roo Tail Stew could become our diet every night.
8th July 2013 Ora Banda to Kookynie
We Set off from Ora Banda and pass through Siberia on the way to Lake Ballard and the sculptures by Antony Gormley. We lunch at the lake and then travel to Menzies, and on to Niagra Dam and the iconic Pub at Kookynie where we drop in for a beer after setting up camp a few k's out of town. We return later to camp for dinner and Mal arcs up his projector with the help of Bretts 1000w inverter so we can watch Mad Max 1 on a canvas screen by the campfire.
Margaret River - Western Australia
Margaret River has evolved into the ultimate smorgasbord of fine wine, good food and spectacular scenery featuring world-class wineries, boutique breweries, and restaurants overlooking sweeping vineyards and surf breaks. No wonder it's rated by Lonely Planet as one of the top ten places on Earth.
Ord Valley Muster in Kununurra, Western Australia
The Ord Valley Muster in Kununurra is Western Australia's biggest outback celebration. Over 10 days, it showcases the extraordinary diversity, talent and culture of the Kimberley communities and the awe-inspiring natural beauty of one of the last true wilderness areas on Earth.
As Frank Rodriguez, co-founder of the event, and the people of Kununurra prepared to host the 14th annual Ord Valley Muster, Tourism Western Australia caught up with some of the local characters that make this celebration a must-see.
Meet Spike, founder of The Hoochery -- the longest operating legal distillery in Western Australia. The Hoochery was the venue for the first ever Muster, and today hosts the ever-more popular Ord Valley Muster Comedy Show.
Meet Stockman Mitch Bradford, one of the riders competing in the Kununurra Bushman's Rodeo; Andrea Bolten of the Community Choir, who performed in Music Under the Stars; the extraordinary Waringarri Corriboree; and Matt Bamkin of 42 Decibel, one of the many great music acts creating the event crescendo, known as the Kimberley Moon Experience.

9th July 2013 Kookynie to Great Central Road Gravel Pit
On the road again we stop in at Laverton to restock and refuel before hitting the Great Central Road to Warburton.
All is going well until Mike's Range Rover made a loud BANG! He had a rear disc disintegration which looked fatal at first, but Brett stepped in again with his 1000 watt inverter to run a 3 inch angle grinder and cut the disc off and place a piece of it into the callipers and bolted to the backing plate to fool the Rangey's computer into thinking all was good and to let us continue the journey without rear brakes.
It was an excellent piece of bush mechanics and we were soon continuing our journey to an elevated gravel pit campsite before dusk.
Another great campfire was enjoyed before I retired to the warmth of my pre heated HARDABUT Cruiser bunk and a good nights sleep before we were to push on to Warburton the next day.
Guess which Lake Ballard statue I was? | Just Another Day in WA
Lake Ballard is home to the world’s largest outdoor art gallery with 51 wrought iron statues carefully laid out on 10 square kilometres of a waterless, white salt lake. Photographs don’t do it justice. In fact, when you’re standing there, it still seems a little unbelievable.

Where is Lake Ballard? This expansive salt lake and its mysterious statues are not far from Kookynie, or a couple hours' drive north-east of Kalgoorlie in the Golden Outback of Western Australia.
