Every top tourist destination has a spectacular drive, and for Australia it's the Great Ocean Road. Built to provide employment during the Depression, the road stretches for 300 km along Australia's southeast coast from the surfing town of Torquay to the town of Allansford, near Warrnambool in the state of Victoria. The top attraction along the road is the Port Campbell National Park with the wind and wave-sculpted rock formations known as the Twelve Apostles, London Bridge, the Arch, and Loch Ard Gorge. From a helicopter, these rock formations look like giant puzzle pieces lashed by the pounding surf of the Southern Ocean.

Witness the rugged splendor of the famous 12 Apostles, magnificent rock stacks that rise up majestically from the Southern Ocean on Victoria's dramatic coastline.Created by constant erosion of the limestone cliffs of the mainland beginning 10-20 million years ago, the stormy Southern Ocean and blasting winds gradually eroded the softer limestone, forming caves in the cliffs.
The caves eventually became arches and when they collapsed rock stacks up to 45 meters high were left isolated from the shore. View the 12 Apostles at sunrise and sunset as they change color from dark and foreboding in shadow to brilliant sandy yellow under a full sun.
The 12 Apostles are located 275 kilometer west of Melbourne, approximately a four-hour drive along the Great Ocean Road.
(There's no better place to lose life's daily trivia than the dramatic, rugged and windswept coastline where the world-famous Twelve Apostles sit. These limestone pillars rise out of the Southern Ocean in Port Campbell National Park like the noble, craggy sentinels of an ancient world. Once upon a time or up to 20 million years ago they were connected to the cliffs of the mainland. The waves and wind carved them into caves, then arches, and eventually battered them down into columns that rise up to 45 meters high.
The fierce elements continue to erode the stacks at a rate of roughly two centimeters a year. Today only eight stacks remain and some have given up the fight against nature in recent years. The London Arch was part of a natural double-span bridge until 1990 when the arch closest to the shore collapsed, leaving two stunned tourists stranded. Another 50 meter tall Apostle fell in 2005.
It's an invigorating, end-of-the-earth feeling to see this coastline when it's being whipped by howling winds and huge seas. Feel the sea spray on your face, hear the blowholes roar as they spurt with water and watch the ocean foaming around the stacks.
On calmer days, you can see the Twelve Apostles morph from foreboding silhouettes in shadow to glorious sand-coloured monuments in the sun. Capture soul-stirring views at sunrise and sunset or get an idea of the epic scale of this place from the wide beach below. Follow the Gibson Steps 70 metres down the cliff face to the sand, where you'll be literally dwarfed by a gigantic rock stack.
Learn about shipwreck history, geology and coastal ecology on self-guided walks at Loch Ard Gorge. Or get up close to spectacular Apostles such as Razorback, Island Archway, Thunder Cave, Bakers Oven Rock, Sentinel Rocks and the Grotto. You can even take in this sculpted, shipwreck coast with a history lesson on a helicopter trip.
The elements have been wearing down the huge pillars for millions of years, but they'll only take a few minutes to erode your small stuff.

If you for accommodation near the 12 Apostles (along the Great Ocean Road) this is in a fantastic location being less than a 15 minute drive. Other nearby attractions are the London Arch, Loch ard Gorge. Bay of Islands and Port Campbell discovery walk for beautiful views of the town. Check out the tourist office in town for more things to do along the Great Ocean Road.
Port Campbell is a small coastal town on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. As Sea Foam Villas is right in the central part of town it’s easy to walk not only to the beach area, but to some of the town’s restaurants and cafes. In the video I show a few places you can eat in Port Campbell. I also show how to get from Melbourne to Port Campbell.
Sea Foam Villas hav onsite free parking. The villas have a patio or balcony and cooking facilities. All accommodation offers a kitchenette or fully equipped kitchen. Each villa and apartment has a living area with a sofa and a flat-screen TV with satellite channels. Some accommodation offers a spa bath or bay views.
Rooms start from the Standard Villa, one bedroom villas, two bedroom villas and a 3 bedroom penthouse. With prices for the standard starting from around $155 and the penthouse for around $500. The room I booked was the 1 bedroom villa with bay view and that is what the review is based on. For the best rates at Sea Foam Villas have a look directly at the hotel’s own website or check out sites such as Trivago, TripAdvisor or HotelsCombined. I found generally the rates were all similar. On this trip I booked with Bookings.com.
On their website they state luxury accommodation on the Great Ocean Road, while the room I stayed in, I found it a bit of a stretch, it’s more of mid-market hotel. Overall I found the place OK, great location – easy walking distance to the beach and the main street of Port Campbell. I think it would suit a couple wanting to stay along the Great Ocean Road (the villa I had anyhow) for a weekender or possibly longer.

Kennett River Holiday Park | Best Places to Stay on the Great Ocean Road Victoria Australia
Kennett River Holiday Park offers some great accommodation along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria Australia. If you want to set up a tent, caravan or motor home, this caravan park by Kennett River is a lovely spot to do it. It is right by the ocean. Across the road is the Kafe Koala a popular tourist spot on the Great Ocean Road as this is where you can feed the birds. The birds are really tame and will eat out of your hand. You can find king parrots and rosellas here. Great for taking selfies! The Koala walk at Kennett River (along The Grey River Rd) is perfect to spot to see koalas up close for photos. One of the best places in Australia to see koalas in the wild. An awesome experience and a must do when you come to Victoria. You will never forget it! Not to mention, nearby (walking distance) you can go kangaroo spotting.
Unpowered sites start from around $35 a night with powered sites from around $41. For cabins, the standard start from $120. There are a couple of cabins that face the ocean. Cabin 1, which I stayed at with a partial view of the ocean from the balcony started from $144. The cabin came with TV, kitchen, refrigerator, cooking facilities and microwave oven. The bathroom had shower with hot and cold water. You can book the rooms on the resorts own website, or have a look at TripAdvisor, Expedia, Wotif or hotel.com as shown.
The park has its own communal kitchen, shower block and some BBQs.
If you want to eat out. The nearest place is the Wye Beach Hotel for some pub meals. If you need more, the larger town of Lorne is around 30 minute driver away, or in the other direction Apollo Bay. Here you can find supermarkets, cafes, chemists and doctors.
Other things to do around Kennett River, is the river walk, a pleasant and peaceful walk. Or just head over to the beach and feel the fresh sea breezes. You can surf here at the point break. If you like waterfalls, there is Sheoak Falls that’s only a short drive away. Further afield is world-famous 12 Apostles (around a 2 hour drive) as well the beautiful scenery in the part of Victoria.
For me I loved my stay at Kennett River Holiday Park, if you are looking for a great place to stay on the Great Ocean Road you should consider this place. Great for families or couples. Feeding the birds and seeing the koalas in the park as well as on the Koala walk was one of the best experiences. If you are looking at some of the best things to do on the Great Ocean Road, this is one of the best.
